    Hi,
I'm considering purchasing TR from Japan and while it looks good, it has some strange relay going into engine (see photo).

I've never seen these on any other engine bay photo and I don't like the looks of that wiring.
The owner claims he "doesn't know what it's for" and "it's a Japanese thing".

Do you know why it's there?

Should it be a concern that this is a "quick fix" to hide a bigger problem?

yes, could be - fuse box???
but this is not a quick fix when it is for the starter. this is recommended from the specialist here to do so. I also did it

that is why I ask where the wires come from

can you make a clearer photo from this small box so I can read what is written? I think this is a relay?

    Two more photos attached.
Sorry, they're taken from video so the quality is quite bad.
One of the photos shows where the cable goes into engine.

    Brand seems to be "Elecman".

I guess my question is - why would it be added to the car?

It's a "band-aid" fix for the bad connections of the white start command terminal 50 wire at the fuse-relay panel. I will give them some credit for using a relay that is better suited for mounting in the engine bay than the little Bosch cube relays; however, putting a relay in the system controlling the starter solenoid is something that auto manufacturers avoid (for good reason).

Much better IMO to add a jumper wire directly connecting the white wire in the w connector to the white wire in the y connector (so bad connections in those connectors have no effect on the starter solenoid operation):

as I see it and I thaught already the relais is connected to the starter solenoid ( if I see it right? )

I agree with you steve, but the relais is also a good solution if the owner not cares about if it is original or not. but to jump the 2 white wires is a better solution and not to see at first sight

Just for information completeness (since many thread links in prior posts are now not working :(), I'll add that another connection to check/reseat when having TR start cranking trouble is the square, 9-pin C11 connector under the coolant expansion tank:

And, finally, the terminal 50 spade connector of the white wire at the starter solenoid itself should also be checked for tightness and reseated.
