I'd put a DVM (or test light) on the coil + terminal and look at voltage through the phases of the key rotation. It should be 12V unless the car is off.

Assuming same fuse box as 87 mondial, try the 3 relays on the far right of the fusebox. Top, middle and bottom row. Check the bosch pt no as 2 the same and 1 different. These control the start, plus others.

Might be crazy, but it might be your ignition switch.

I'd do a quick test... find your start wires and run wires and just put them together. I had an issue like this with a ignition switch before that had worn out.

Any fuel smell? Literally bought an 83 two weeks ago and the fuel accumulator went bad on transit. Somewhat different symptoms but similar enough. Fixed now and running like a champ

Your first reply was good advice. Test the coil voltage at different key positions and if no 12VDC in start position then check the relays or switch as already suggested. Report back as a courtesy :)

Sounds like relay V is not staying in. Bottom right in the fuse board

Assuming same as mondial, there should be a red, white and yellow stripped black wire. Red is permanent supply to key switch, yellow stripped black becomes live in pos 1 and supplies other items, white becomes live when key turned to start( power supply to starter solenoid)

Wasn't there someone on here that had a similar issue a while ago? In that case the two wires at the ignition switch were swapped and that solved the problem if I recall correctly. You might want to do a search for it.

Break the fuel line by the pump and rig up a pipe into a container to see if the pump is working first. I take it the plugs are sparking when hung out.
There is a thread on here about the fuel pump safety switch, look at it down the index page under Fuel pump question

If you're having backfiring I'm wondering if the ecu has started to fail. I've had similar issues before with other cars and it was the ecu that was the culprit.

There is no "shop book" specifically for 308GTBi/Si (2-valve). What's available to you to blend together is:

    1. The 308GT4 WSM -- this will cover much of the suspension, brakes, etc. -- available at Carl Rose's website: https://ferrari.cdyn.com

    2. The Mondial8/MondialQV 281/83 WSM -- this has the 3.0L-V8 (2-valve) Digiplex ignition system information and Bosch CIS information for K-Jet without Lambda (as used on US version and euro version) -- also available at Carl's website (along with other useful stuff).

    3. The 308GTBi/Si Spare Parts Catalogue -- I can't recall the US version SPC being available on-line, but the euro version SPC is what is shown at the parts vendors who still have on-line SPCs available -- for example, www.eurospares.co.uk or www.ferrariparts.co.uk

(If someone has a 1980-82 US version 308GTBi/Si SPC in pdf form, please let me know.)

    4. The OM for your exact year/version -- this has the wiring diagram, and, for the US version, a lot of good technical figures and descriptions of the specialized US emission equipment. This is also the best reference for the technical specifications (valve clearances, ignition map, etc.).

Didn't get this edited in time, but Carl also has the 1981-82 US version Mondial SPC 214/81 available which uses the same US emission components on the engine.

Had a related problem a couple of years ago. The car would be difficult to start....would get going and then stop after a few seconds. Found it was an old fuel line that was "collapsing" under the venturi flow of the fuel through it. New fuel lines throughout...no problems!
