I went for a normal drive this afternoon and when I got back to my garage I noticed a puddle of fluid leaking from the rear of the car. Any ideas of what it could be? Rear diff? Where are the transmissions located? 2914 FF with 10k miles. Thanks Image Unavailable, Please Login

I assume no dash sign? Hopefully it’s not the PTU.
Did u get the warranty just in case?
Gosh those FF are not that reliable. Hope it’s nothing!

Nothing on the dash. Isn't the PTU in the front? No warranty. :(

I came across the same issue during July, The rear trans seal failed which caused fluid to leak out and occasionally started smoking during driving. I got my tech to rebuild the trans and issue free since.

That definitely looks like coming from the main tranny. You should take it to the dealer asap.

The FF has a Transaxle. This is not an FF issue. The FF has the same unit as the F12, Lusso and 812. It might be a seal, or it might be a bearing. Seeing that you have no warranty, let's hope it's a seal. I will strongly advise you not to drive it to the dealer. Get them to arrange transport.

The PTU is on the front of the engine, so that has nothing to do with oil from the rear.

Why did you have to rebuild the whole trans? How much did it cost?

Yep. The DCT and rear diff is basically built as one unit and is part of the rear axle. That's why our boot space sucks:D

Rebuild cost for me was $15k out the door. My tech advised me since my unit is early production there's a set of issue that needs to be addressed to prevent any failures in the future.

Why couldn't he just replace the seals?

    Hi Akhil,

When you say, "But for me I just did the rest", what exactly are you referring too?

    Thank you kindly.

Just FYI my car was a 13 ans Ferrari refused to do extended warranty to previous owner until he replaced as a preventative measure the DCT. So not sure they will tell u yes straight up. They are smart like that!

That would be illegal. Can't ask a customer to replace something as preventative measure to obtain warranty.

Well they inspected the car and told him his dct was about to fail so he replaced it but it was still
    Cover by warranty though.

I had twice as much fluid as that last December after driving very spirited the day before. I had 35K miles and extended warranty on my 2012 FF. It was $15K to fix. Said it was the intermediate transmission needed to be replaced. No problems since.

    Not entirely so.

A tear-down and cleaning is a minimum. First off, where has the piece of seal that has detached itself ended up? Is there any kind of debris in the trans? You don't know.
Has the leak caused water or dirt to enter?
Has the low fluid level damaged clutch plates? Has moisture or debris affected clutch plates?

When you are dealing with this kind of issue, there is a very good chance that everything's fine, but a clean and inspection is a must.

This is definitely a case of doing it right the first time is the cheapest fix.
