'Loving my first Ferrari, a 2015 458 Spider. It seems like driving with transmission in Auto really allows the car to perform at peak (I use race mode). Do you drive it, when driving 'spiritedly' in Auto or Manual?

95% in manual .... the thrill of the car is having control of downshifting and up shifting when you want, not when the computer wants.

the 458/FF/f12 are very capable in auto - not abusive or boring, some really great downshift sounds too that i can never replicate. but at full throttle there is nothing like a right hand squeeze in my opinion

Auto is fine when just cruising around but when you want to do spirited driving definitely manual.

yes, the biggest problem in Auto is the car hunts for the highest gear, and will be in 7th gear at low speeds.

I use Auto during warmup only. Even in manual the car will downshift if you forget.

From pulling out of the garage, while driving on surface streets waiting for tires/engines to come up temp, auto/comfort.
Once I hit the back roads, manual and whatever manettino setting floats your boat.
Enjoy. 458S is a great car.

Auto works great if you are able to floor the car from corner to corner. If you have don't have that ability on your road of choice, then I prefer to manually down shift while in auto mode entering a corner and let the computer handle shifting while I focus on the limit of the tires and not binning it.

I never thought 458 performed at "peak" when in auto. It just shifts as quickly as it can to 7th. Its actually a bit embarrassing. Manual all day.

My fav way is CT off and manual. Less gear change kick than RACE. Manual and sport for traffic. Auto if I’m being lazy.

I only use auto when the car is yet to achieve its service temperature, or while stuck in heavy city traffic.

IMHO, the fun of exploring that 7 speed DCT lies in shifting yourself. Furthermore, when traveling at “civil” speeds, the auto mode shifts way too early for my taste. It feels just slightly above stall, which I regard as a nuisance.

I end up using the car in manual mode and manettino in Race 99% of the time, although I concede and realize that for the more seasoned driver such as many of you here, the Race mode doesn’t quite cut it.

    Kindest regards,

    Nuno.

10,000 miles in my 458 and I think I drove maybe 1 or 2 miles in Auto mode, just to see what it was like.

I personally thought Auto mode was so terrible that I never bothered to enable it again.

I always drove manual and usually either in Sport mode or CT off.

Auto minimally and only at slow speeds around town. Manual 98% of the time.
