Ex-F1 driver Nick Heidfeld thinks Sebastian Vettel will have ensured he is equal to Lance Stroll by contract at Aston Martin.

At the end of the 2020 season Racing Point will morph into Aston Martin after team owner Lawrence Stroll purchased a stake in the luxury car manufacturer.

His son Lance Stroll will of course continue with the outfit, but they chose to offload Sergio Perez in favour of Vettel for 2021, despite the fact that the Mexican racer is ahead of Stroll in Drivers’ Championship after competing in one race fewer than his team-mate.

Perez has played second fiddle to Stroll in 2020, receiving the updates that Stroll does only when enough spares are available, so Heidfeld is certain that Vettel will have protected himself against such treatment.

“If your teammate is also the team owner’s son, you have to be extremely careful. It is very likely that the son will be favoured by the owner,” Heidfeld is quoted by Grandpx.news.

“Perez has already complained that he only gets an update once the spare parts are ready for Lance.

“But I’m sure that Sebastian has taken precautions and has a clause in his contract guaranteeing that he is at least equal. Anything else would surprise me or even be crazy. Sebastian won’t be that naive.”

Vettel’s former colleague at Red Bull, head of their driver programme Helmut Marko, also expressed his concern over how Vettel may be treated at Aston Martin.

“When you hear that all the updates already go to Stroll junior and only when there are three copies does Perez get them, I hope that they treat him (Vettel) fairly,” Marko told Sky Deutschland.

No worries. RP will make sure there is enough space on the track for Seb to spin freely on his own.

How embarrassing would it be if Vettel can't beat Stroll?

With less pressure, Vettel could do relatively better at Aston where he is wanted, than at Ferrari.
The announcement that he was ditched from the Scuderia has completely demotivated him.
I don't think there is any love lost between him and Binotto, and now he is just going through the motions until the end of this season.
Like for many drivers before, the Ferrari experience has turned sour,

Perez suffered potentially worse and is driving well. Charles crushed the fragile Vettel, not Binotto. Charles is pushing him out like Ricci did.

Vettel has some kind of confidence issue. There's something going on inside. He needs to get that back.

Yeah, when it's gone it can be very hard to get back. What if his start at AM is not that great? He might end up with a permanent loss of confidence like Grosjean

I believe Vettel's decline is due to a combination of things: loss of confidence, loss of "love" by the home team but also simply loss of grip of the rear end of the car and probably loss of use-by-date, aka getting too old for driving in a circle to quote the great Lauda

While Aston Martin will give him some love and possibly a confidence boost, the other problems will remain.

I hope Lance will beat him. At any rate it should be interesting to follow.

All too easy to judge from the comfort of the armchair, but losing the rear of the car throughout the season(s) to me is a sign of a mediocre driver. The great drivers make the car work for them, even when it means adjusting the driving style. Leclerc seems to be able to do it, Vettel does not seem to adapt. Same at RB, Verstappen can do the magic of extracting the performance of the car, when Albon keeps on making stupid little mistakes which cost him very dearly.

Vettel and Kimi are the least adaptable WDC on the grid. Limited operating window for both!

RP deserve what they're going to get next season. Sacking Perez and Ocon (admittedly not tier 1) for Vettel/Stroll is a joke.

Yes but Lance will have the opportunity to outperform a 4 time WDC in "equal" machinery. It will be a character building experience.

Considering out of the 14 canadians to have entered an F1 event, only 5 have actually more than 3 entries to their names....this is not exactly something one would boast about.
