Last night, upon returning to Krakow, I was craving authentic Polish food. So we went to U Babci Maliny (translates as "At Grandma Raspberry's). Its one of my go-to places for that type of food. Its a usually crowded-with-students, hidden-away-underground, little place with food that does seem made by someone's grandmother. You order at the little window (the phrase overhead says "Grandmother recommends"). Then take a seat at one of many long wooden benches ala a Hofbräuhaus, until they call your number and you pick up a plastic tray loaded with Polish yumminess...

We ordered a Polish Feast of all the things I have been craving:

    - Zurek soup - the white borscht with hard-boiled egg and sausage, made in a sour fermented rye broth
    - Inside the bread bowl is Bigos - a mixture of braised cabbage and meat with a tangy flavor
    - The usual assortment of salads (carrot, cabbages)
    - Smoked mountain cheese with cranberry sauce
    - Potato pancakes "Hungarian style" with a paprika and braised beef sauce

I loved all the soups and "salads" they had in Krakow. Ordered a pork knuckle before realizing it was huge. My son and I split it and still didn't eat half of it. Zurek soup looks great as does the rest of it. Wish I was there, we could meet up for food! My son is making perogies at home now...probably not as good as in the pic but fun to eat and cook.

Get off F-chat. Last time we had a power outage. I had to sit in the dark with the pooch, hoping it would come back on before it got scorching hot in the house. Backup plan was grab the dog and hang out in the truck with the AC blasting!

Hot links from a small German grocery store in Muenster, Texas. They did not skimp on spice.

Power is back. Came on about five minutes in the door. I decided to pick up the Pizza Hut. I needed puppy food and Petsmart is across the street.

OK. I did this one since it was closest to what I kinda sorta had in the way of ingredients. Used chicken breast, Meyer lemons, veggie sausage, onion powder, garlic powder, dried mushrooms, a sweet red wine (Lambrusco), and herbes de Provence. It wasn't half bad.

Bacon cheeseburger at Fatburger. It was very good, even though they overcooked it.

I don't often eat salad, but one was needed recently after all the Polish dinners...so thought I would document for the ages here:

    After surviving salad night...

I got to enjoy cooking a nice meal with my Ania for the first time since we were in London last spring.

Blackened Cajun Shrimp with Creole Corn Hash. (Took a lot of ingredients as you can see in the before pic...)

Served with my first-ever Polish wine. Ania picked it up (its made from several grapes I've never heard of...was a bit on the off-dry side and went very well with the very spicy creole/cajun dish).

    Yummy!
