Does "numbers matching" mean it could be the non-original motor, but so long as its the factory correct replacement, its still "numbers matching"?

Or does "numbers matching" mean its got the numbered block that was built into that chassis when produced originally?

that's a good question, I don't know the muscle car standards. I believe numbers matching original > factory recall replacement > correct non-numbers > not correct.

The "holy grail" of questions for most muscle car buyers and most often it is correct block stamp/can be non-original engine for sellers and original block for buyers. Lots of confusion which allows some salesmanship.

thanks for the reply. I find it interesting that their can be two definitions. "Original numbers matching" or "numbers matching" can only mean one thing imho. A replacement shock absorber may well also have the same part number as the original one, but that don't make the car "numbers matching", it merely makes its replacement parts OEM spec (vs. enhanced/after-market).

Put simply, if there is a replacement block, its SN doesn't actually "match" with anything. So it can be the correct part number, but it can't "match numbers" with the original car.

For me, the word "matching" is the important one. It says plainly that one number (the chassis) matched another number (the bock). Perhaps we would all be better of if we used these two phrases:

    1) Original matching numbers (means what it says)
    2) Correct replacement xyx (means what it says)

    This is 100%.

In the GM world the vin of the car is stamped on the block. The vin on the block and the vin on the car are what you want to match.

Part numbers may have a wide range of years used. For example corvettes base engine was a 327 from 1962-1967. There were variants, but in essence all those years had the same part number. One could take a 1967 327, put it in a 1962 corvette and by part numbers it would "match" as per application. Seller often try to pass matching part number as numbers matching.

At the end of the day these cars are still fun to drive and own. True matching numbers is only a function of value not enjoyment.

For those that thing a boss 429 is 127 better... It's not. The 302 is the car to own. I had both at the same time and I couldn't stand that 429. The 302 was fun though. Just remember it's a transam car and likes to rev.

A block with the correct casting for the engine block but has a much later casting date would be called a restoration engine in the vette world and must be disclosed if objective.

What a jewel, top and bottom, sorted, with the right kind of prior owners.

It is interesting that we are still obsessed with minute details such as this engine number, and it is seen as reason to discount the price by tens of thousands, when much of the market is paying a premium for modified or “reimagined” cars.

What's more interesting to me is that Cat's, (assuming they are still a sponsor), hasn't commented on this.

they aren't a sponsor anymore, I'm not too mad at Cat's, it just educated me a little more at the dealer game. I REALLY don't think Roy knew better and misrepresented it. He gets a bunch of cars in, with your own eyes looks good, and he trusted what was documented about it before and just repeated it. There is certainly no way he could know about the engine, heck, the people that even rebuilt the engine for me and are a specialized vintage Mustang shop said it was numbers matching. They did tell me one head had been replaced with correct part.
