NFL’s Raiders Making Las Vegas Debut Versus New Orleans Saints

The Las Vegas Raiders will open their glitzy Allegiant Stadium on Monday in a primetime showcase against the New Orleans Saints. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the $1.84 billion stadium that seats 65,000 fans will be empty. Moreover, the anticipated flood of visiting fans will likely not happen, either.

That’s impacting sportsbooks, though perhaps not to a major degree.

We seem to be getting more prop play than normal, which seems to be an effect of that,” Matthew Metcalf, the sportsbook director for Circa Sports, told Casino.org on Monday. “On the game, it’s a tad too early to tell. But there seems to a mild uptick in action so far.”

    Just Win, Baby
The arrival of the NHL in Las Vegas had a dramatic impact on hockey betting. In Clark County, Nev., where Las Vegas is located, hockey betting soared from $157 million during the 2016-17 season to $214 million in 2017-18. That occurred with the arrival of the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights, according to ESPN.

However, football is what fuels sports betting. Thus, the Las Vegas Raiders might not provide a significant uptick on bets over the Oakland Raiders. What would matter is if the Raiders live up to their “Just Win, Baby” mantra.

Local betting interest could increase if they can upset the Saints, who are among the prime Super Bowl contenders.

Long term, I would expect the Raiders’ handle to grow proportionately to their win-loss record,” Metcalf said. “I think the explosion of hockey wagering regarding the Knights has been directly correlated to their success, kind of the way we see an uptick in (Los Angeles) Dodgers and Lakers bets when those teams are winning.”

If life returns to normal next year, the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins will be four of the out-of-division teams that visit Las Vegas. Plus, their AFC West rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, and Denver Broncos will be making the trek to Vegas. Philadelphia fans, in particular, travel well, which could mean additional action at Vegas sportsbooks.

    Saints Are Favored
As for the game, New Orleans is a 5.5-point favorite. According to Patrick Eichner, PointsBet’s director of communications, 78 percent of the spread tickets and 61 percent of the spread money has gone on the Saints to cover as of Monday morning. On the moneyline, more than 80 percent of the tickets and handle has been placed on the Saints. The over/under is 48.5.

The people aren’t impressed with the Raiders kicking off their new home in Vegas tonight,” said Andrew Mannino, the senior sports content analyst at PointsBet, to Casino.org. “We’ve got some lopsided handle on the Saints. I don’t think people are going to be impressed by the Raiders until they show what they can do.

“This is a great test for them – at home against Drew Brees. We’re seeing a ton of action on the over. Bettors are certainly expecting a shootout tonight. We’ve got about 80 percent of the handle on the over in this game, so we’ll be rooting for the Raiders to pull out a close one at home.”

Both teams are coming off season-opening wins. Raiders running back Josh Jacobs had 139 scrimmage yards and three rushing touchdowns in last week’s win at the Carolina Panthers. Brees, the Saints’ record-setting quarterback, threw two touchdown passes last week in a showdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’ll be without prolific receiver Michael Thomas (ankle).

The Las Vegas Raiders were born on Jan. 22. One day later, the franchise found an official gaming partner with MGM Resorts International.

Never heard that nickname for him?

When he played for my Gators in 2006, he had a laptop stolen from another student. When he found out he was about to be searched for it, he literally threw it out of the window of his dorm. He was subsequently kicked off the team.

He then went to a juco (Blinn) and while there he was recruited by Miss State. His father agreed to receive payment from Miss State for him to play for them. (S)cam denies knowing any of that agreement and by saying that was able to play elsewhere (Auburn) instead of an NCAA ban and his father was not allowed to attend his games.

The sportsbooks may have gotten skunked on this game. I had the Raiders +5 1/2 and the 48.5 points over. I thought the Raiders would need the points and so did every oddsmaker in town. The spread dropped down to 3 at game time. There was a lot of action and a few big bets on the Raiders.

NFL Game of the Year: Chiefs at Ravens Getting Heavy Action

The Kansas City Chiefs won last year’s Super Bowl while the Baltimore Ravens had the season’s best regular-season record. Their quarterbacks have won the last two NFL MVP awards.

In what might wind up being the NFL’s game of the year, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will play at the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. (Image: Robert Hanashiro/USA TODAY Sports)

On Monday night, the Ravens will host the Chiefs in one of the most hotly anticipated regular-season games in years. The betting interest is running hot, too, in a matchup pitting the leading Super Bowl favorites.

“This will be one of the bigger betting Monday night games we’ve ever had,” Johnny Avello, the director of race and sportsbook operations for DraftKings, told Casino.org.

    Heavy Action
Interest in this game started early and has only intensified as the week has progressed.

In terms of the amount of action, tonight will definitely shake out to be a monster,” Patrick Eichner, PointsBet’s director of communications, told Casino.org.

“I remember taking a look earlier just before kickoff of the Thursday night game and the Chiefs-Ravens matchup was a not-so-distant second already in terms of handle, interest, action. By the time we get to kickoff tonight, there’s sure to be a lot of action on that game.”

At PointsBet, the Ravens opened as 2.5-point favorites. It crept up to 3.5 but fell back to 3 on Monday afternoon. The over/under rose, too, from 52 to 54.5 points. At DraftKings, the game opened at 3.5 and has stayed put, though the total moved from 52.5 points to 54.5.

At BetMGM, the Ravens have been a steady 3.5-point favorite with a total of 54.5. The total at William Hill was up to 55.5 with about 5 hours until kickoff.

We’re pretty split,” Eichner told Casino.org. “We’re slightly favoring the Ravens on the side. The Chiefs are obviously the much more popular underdog play with them being a 3-point dog. You can’t find Chiefs moneyline at a value like that, so the Chiefs’ moneyline will continue to be the popular play heading into the game. I expect it to get more lopsided on that.”

With Kansas City’s ability to score points in a hurry, like it did in last year’s run to the championship, the in-play betting will be what Eichner is watching.

They are a squad that has proven so often that they are able to flip the switch and make plays, no matter if they had a bad first half or a bad three quarters,” Eichner said.

“They seem to have that switch they can flick and throw themselves right back into any football game. It will be interesting to see how the live money starts to come in. That will be really telling as far as what our final result is on this game.”

With most of the money on the moneyline and the spread being placed on Kansas City, sportsbooks will be rooting for a low-scoring game won by the Ravens by one or two points.

    Super Bowl Favorites
The Chiefs opened the season as a solid favorite to be repeat Super Bowl champions but the odds have moved following a pair of thoroughly dominant victories by Baltimore.

At PointsBet, the Ravens are +450 while the Chiefs are +500. At BetMGM, the Ravens are +450 and the Chiefs are +550. At DraftKings, both teams are +525.

The winner tonight will obviously impact those odds.

Here’s what I would think would happen,” Avello said. “If the Ravens win by this game by a touchdown, they would probably drop to about to 4 1/2 to 1 from 5, or possibly 4, and the Chiefs probably would get raised up to 6 or maybe even 6 1/2. If the Chiefs were able to win this game, they’re probably going to get dropped to 4 and the Ravens are probably going to get boosted up to 6. That’s the way I would see that happening.”

For player props at DraftKings, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 MVP, has an over/under of 292.5 passing yards. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, the 2019 MVP, has an over/under of 255.5 passing yards and 62.5 rushing yards.

After Positive COVID Tests, Sportsbooks Take Two NFL Games Off Board

After going mostly unscathed for the first three weeks of the football season, at least nine members of the Tennessee Titans – including three players – have tested positive for COVID-19. Those positive tests delivered a harsh reality check to the NFL on Tuesday.

The Titans won at the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Now, both teams have shut team headquarters until the width of the outbreak can be determined.

    Games Off Board
Because of the uncertainty, sportsbooks removed from their boards the Titans’ home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Vikings’ game at the Houston Texans.

It’s so early in the week. We don’t get a lot of bets early in the week, anyway, so we took it down, waiting for more information,” said Nick Bogdanovich, the director of trading at William Hill, to Casino.org on Tuesday.

“Is it (quarterback Ryan) Tannehill? Is it (running back Derrick) Henry? Is it three backup special-teams guys? Who knows what they’re going to do. Hopefully COVID won’t be a factor in the NFL. I don’t know what would ever happen if they had to cancel a game or two. Obviously, the schedule is the schedule. So, fingers crossed we don’t have a COVID problem in the NFL.”

After some positive tests at the start of NFL training camps in August, the league had practically been free of COVID. In fact, as of Tuesday, only four players in the entire league were on COVID-19 reserve lists. One of those was cornerback A.J. Terrell, the Atlanta Falcons’ first-round pick, who tested positive the day before Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. That game was played as scheduled and no other members of the Falcons have tested positive.

“After the baseball season and all this other stuff we’ve gone through, there’s nothing that’s going to surprise us anymore,” Ed Salmons, the vice president of risk management and oddsmaking at Westgate SuperBook, told Casino.org.

    No Changes to Schedule
As the NFL works to determine whether COVID has spread to more players on the Titans, or if anyone on the Vikings was infected during Sunday’s game, their Week 4 games are set to be played as scheduled. That could change, obviously, depending on the number of impacted players.

As noted by ESPN.com, there is a relatively easy way to reschedule the Titans-Steelers game. The league could play that game in Week 7 by moving the Steelers’ game that week against the Baltimore Ravens to Week 8, when those teams have byes. There is no easy path to make up the Vikings-Texans game, though both teams are 0-3 and maybe it wouldn’t be necessary. Another option would be to move those games to Monday, which at least would allow an additional day of testing and contact tracing.

It’s going to happen and you’re going to have to cancel games,” Salmons said. “It’s happened in college. Baseball is the one sport that can stick to their deadlines because they changed the rules to play seven-inning doubleheaders and starting extra innings with a guy on second. They totally blew up their sport just to get the season in.

“The NFL, there’s no way they can do Mickey Mouse stuff like that to get these games in. It just seems to me this isn’t going to be the last time something like this happens.”

The Green Bay Packers are scheduled to host the Falcons on Monday. On a per-capita basis, the Green Bay area is dealing with the largest COVID outbreak among the NFL’s 30 cities and is one of the hardest hit in the nation overall.

“I think we always have to be very, very mindful, especially where we’re at in our area right now,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said on Monday. “Our guys have done an outstanding job of being disciplined, of taking care of themselves. Really, it comes down to putting the team first, and we’ve got to continue to do that. Because all it takes is one guy. If one guy gets it, it can take down this whole operation. So, our guys have done an outstanding job, and we’ve got to continue to be that way.”

The positive tests impacted sports betting equities.

Players, coaches and some team staff members are tested daily for the coronavirus except on game days. Why not game days? That’s because the rapid tests required for Sundays are significantly less accurate. During the week, those daily tests are outsourced to labs, and the turnaround time is about 24 hours.

“On Tuesday morning, the Titans’ COVID testing results returned three new player positives and five new personnel positives,” the league said in a statement. “The Titans will suspend in-person club activities starting today. Likewise, the Vikings will also suspend in-person club activities. Both clubs are working closely with the NFL and the NFLPA, including our infectious disease experts, to evaluate close contacts, perform additional testing and monitor developments. All decisions will be made with health and safety as our primary consideration.”

Betting lines have been impacted by COVID and the lack of fans in the stands.

Two Winless Teams, Denver Broncos and New York Jets, Kick Off NFL Week 4

The NFL’s Week 3 schedule was dominated by two monster games, with the Green Bay Packers beating the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night and the Kansas City Chiefs overwhelming the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.

As a rookie in 2018, Sam Darnold led the New York Jets to a 34-16 victory over the Denver Broncos. The teams will meet again on Thursday night. (Robert Deutsch/USA TODAY Sports)

If Week 3 ended with two bangs, Week 4 is starting with a soaked piece of newspaper. The Denver Broncos play at the New York Jets on Thursday night. Both teams are 0-3.

The Broncos were 3-point favorites on Monday but have fallen to 1.5-point underdogs as of Thursday morning at William Hill.

    Quarterback Troubles
The Jets have been terrible but at least they have their quarterback. Denver will be without Drew Lock for a second consecutive week with an injured throwing shoulder.

The early money is on the Broncos,” Nick Bogdanovich, the director of trading at William Hill, told Casino.org before offering a tongue-in-cheek correction. “Let me rephrase that. I wouldn’t say it’s on the Broncos. I would say it’s against the Jets. I think that’ll be the bettors’ mind-set. Denver’s looked OK but they lost their quarterback. I’d say we’re definitely going to need the Jets, and the money will be bet against the Jets as opposed to on the Broncos.”

Without Lock last week, Jeff Driskel was 17-of-30 for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a 28-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Denver, which lost by two to Tennessee and by five to Pittsburgh with Lock, has been hammered by injuries. Key players on injured reserve include cornerback A.J. Bouye, defensive tackle Jurrell Casey, outside linebacker Von Miller and receiver Courtland Sutton.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold directs a team that has been outscored by an appalling 94-37. The No. 3 pick of the 2018 draft, Darnold has really struggled. Of 33 qualifying quarterbacks, he’s 31st in passer rating (70.8), 31st in yards per attempt (5.85) and 33rd in air yards per completion (3.68). As a rookie, he threw three touchdown passes against the Broncos.

With Denver ranking 30th and New York 32nd in scoring, the over/under of 41 is the lowest this week at William Hill.

    Steelers-Titans Postponed
The biggest game on the docket was postponed on Thursday morning. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans are two of six undefeated teams. The Titans have been hit by 11 positive COVID-19 tests. The NFL considered playing the game on Monday night but two more members of the team tested positive. The game already had been taken off the board by sportsbooks.

In another battle of winless teams, the Houston Texans are 4.5-point favorites over the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota might have dodged a COVID scare, so that game is back on the board at sportsbooks.

The New England Patriots (2-1) play at the Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) on Sunday. The Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champions and favorites again, are 7-point favorites.

Here are this week’s games, with the lines from William Hill. All times are Eastern.
