However much I love the 488 design (where as I dont love the 458 design vs 430) there is simply sadly NOTHING to be done with a 488 to make it sound good, headers/cats/endpipe, I have heard most variations, its tragic ....

Well - I just got home from a spirited drive in my 488 and I have to say that nothing “tragic” occurred.

In fact, it was a ton of fun! Crazy performance and road feel, and...the sound was great. :)

    Blond vs Brunette again....

I think the 488 is much better sounding. It breathes and feels alive. So many nuances to the sound. It's not just a monotone loud noise. It has so much to offer and it sounds "real". To me the 458 especially sounds synthetic.
The 360 and 355 sound natural, so does a 430 with AP headers. To my ears, the 458 sound suffers from the same problem as the car itself. Too many artificial additives.

But we view things differently and like different aspects. If the 458 is what makes you happy, get a 458. A 488 works better for me and that car makes me happier.

I wish people would stop talking about the 488 sound from a standpoint that it is bad or worse than the 458 sound, is some kind of de-facto standard - it isn't. It is personal. I won't get pulled into the mud slinging, but it does bother me that people seem to think that it needs to be worded in a way that points the finger. I could easily tear into the 458 and make that seem a lot more tragic, but what would I gain by that? Nothing.

    Enjoy the 458.

+1 458/Spec sounds synthetic, not as much as a Lambo Huracan or what not and still not a bad NA sound...I think there will always be disappointment when one expects an apple but gets an orange ie expecting a turbo 488 to sound like an NA.

If you compare it against other turbo V8s, it’s quite the standout imho.

I've just changed my 458 for a 488 and i prefer everything about the 488 even down to the sound it makes..Chris Harris said exactly the same when he test drove the 488..The 458's sound is very contrived in my opinion whereas the 488 sounds much more genuine without the obnoxious on/off the 458 suffers from..

Lol. IPE sounding real:D That is hilarious.
The IPE is by far the most artificial sounding exhaust of them all.
    Thanks for the chuckle.

Come on, the 488 is the better car, no question but the sound is much worse. Its not even a question of taste it's just how it is, NA vs Turbo.

Thanks for letting us know the rules. That is helpful. Some of us must have been confused that we didn’t know “how it is” :)

both cars can sound good with an exhaust. A 488 with an exhaust and tune will be louder than a stock 458.

I just dont like how quiet the 488 is stock and then the boost-by-gear on top of that makes the powerband feel artificial.

I think the question of sound is simple: it’s a question of mechanics and engineering. No turbocharged car can compete with a naturally aspirated engine. It’s a fact of life.

That being said, I agree with those who say there is more to a car than sound. I cannot pinpoint just ONE factor that makes me love the 458 or the 488. It’s always several, with varying degrees of importance. That’s where personal preference comes into play. Another fact of life.

Kind regards and keep enjoying your 458s and 488s in good health out there.

    Nuno.

No it is not how it is, come on:)
Before the debut of the 488, I was not a fan of the 458 sound either. It IS a matter of taste, and the fact that I prefer he 488 sound, has nothing to do with me not being a fan of the 458 sound. You like it, I don't. Even though it might be hard for you to believe, I think the 488 sound has some attributes which makes it a lot more engaging and alive compared to the 458.

Now, you and me, let's find a car we both think sounds great and can agree upon:) Maserati GranCabrio MC? Decatted 812?:)

Decated 812 must be out of this world! Again these are road cars I remember once I listened to an Evo FXXK Evo and my car sounded like a diesel after that a 2013 F1 started and the Evo was well much less interesting.

the whole Nürburgring GP was shaking with the F1.... levels :)
