Comparing F1 (or Grand Prix) drivers across eras is a futile exercise. Not just because of the obvious differences.....car specs, tires, season length, track differences, sporting regulation changes, changes in points allocations, etc.....but also because in recent decades F1 drivers have become specialists, rarely venturing outside of their F1 comfort zone to race in other series or types of cars.

If I were asked to name whom I considered the best of all time, I would come at it like this: If I owned a racing team, which 2 or 3 drivers would I want in my team?

I'd argue nobody did more with a worse car than Gilles Villeneuve, but no one thing makes a driver the greatest. Senna and Schumacher both had an unsportsman like streak to them (Senna arguably worse) that Hamilton doesn't have, which to many takes away from some of the other things they did great. Nico arguably took out Hamilton in Spain after botching the previous turn on his way to his lone title, something that Hamilton didn't resort to.

Kind of boggles my mind when people put down Hamilton for having an all dominating car, like Schumacher somehow didn't. I'm not a big Hamilton fan but respect where it's due. Ferrari would be lucky to get a driver of his caliber, especially with their current form.

No. Schumi never beat/outscored a champion team mate as Hamilton and Senna did.

Because they both started with back marker teams, unlike Hamilton who was with a championship winning team from the beginning

Schumacher did not have the best car at Ferrari until 2001. The F-2000 was a tire eating monster that was not near as good as Hakkinen’s. MS drove the car above its own abilities to take the championship.

Hamdashian has only eclipsed Vettel in performance because of his car and the emotional support from the team. He is as fragile as Vettel. Frankly, RB knew how to coach Vettel and Ferrari do not.

Piquet was 3 time world champion when MS and him were teammates.

See my previous post. In 1991, MS debut year. He beat NP in his SECOND F1 RACE ever.

I don't think Hamilton is fragile - if he were he'd have folded like a cheap hat to Alonso as a rookie - and nobody would call Alonso fragile. Hamilton complains which is one of the reasons I'm not a big fan - that and how he makes a big deal of how he overcomes minor things in a race to win that every other driver deals with, like having to push hard for a few laps on old tires is something no other driver has to do, but he's not fragile.

Respectfully and completely disagree. He knew McLaren had his back and we’re supporting him over Alonso. Do you remember when Nicole dumped him and he couldn’t drive. His performance went down the tubes. People had to get her back with him so he could figure out how to drive the car again. When he would win he acted like an American rapper and when he lost he shrunk into a British man child. He has either matured or manages his behavior better recently.

Correct, and Schumacher didn't out score him that year, therefore he never beat a champion team mate

So why didn't they win with the back marker teams?

People are taking time to respond to you and you aren’t having the respect to read or acknowledge it or perhaps you’re simply ignoring the information for your purposes. MS beat NP in his second F1 race ever. He didn’t lose to Piquet in the championship either as he didn’t have the opportunity to beat or lose to Piquet in a season.

Lol! I guess the car had no driver in it when he had multiple wins and podiums during that time!

Remember when Hamdashian lost a possible season F1 debut championship in 2007 because he slid his car into the gravel trap on pit entrance. Good times. That was with the best car on the grid.

Yeah, other drivers couldn't beat him straight up so they had to rely on him making a mistake his rookie year. Back to the question, why didn't they win with the back marker teams?

MS beat NP who was a world champion in his second ever F1 race ergo he did beat a world champion teammate. It’s NOT hard to understand.

When someone makes a error that causes them a victory they get beat ‘straight up’. That’s fair and square.

You’re question is basically why can’t cars that are greatly inferior win. Is this a real question?

Lol, just say neither Senna or Shcumacher won a championship until they were in a well developed car, don't fight it

We are talking over a season though. U guys are all stretching it. Damon Hill also beat Alain Prost at least once and we all know Damon was an « average » world champions
Point is: stop comparing eras. I am fully sure Ayrton is the greatest but stats and variable are such that anyone can have a point to defend Hamilton, Schumacher, Prost, fangio, lauda etc

Again you are really trolling... Did u her watch formula one in the early 80’s? The toleman car had 0 chance to win a race. Yet when it rained and leveled the field senna beat them all. Hamilton? We will never know he was always in a good car compared to a toleman.
