It is so painful to watch the Ferrari team this year. Given Mugello, it is going to be even more (2x) painful racing in Italy twice, and potentially disappointing the Italian fans, twice. Ouch.

Exactly, but in 1980 they had a plan and another engine in the works to fix this. In 2020, I don’t see any possibility to fix the engine situation.

Talk about history repeating itself 40 years later: Charles as Gilles, Vettel as Jody and Sainz as Pironi. Does this mean we can expect a new Postlethwaite for 2022?

Not sure which rock you've been under, but it's been painful watching the Scuderia lose for 12yrs now...but we still here; the true tifosi haven't gone anywhere and are still rooting for a change of tide.

Whatever they were doing with their engines they were pretty stupid to not plan for tightening of the regulations to the point of being hamstrung as badly as they are now! And doubly penalized because of the COVID related restrictions.

As I noted previously I hope someone in charge there is highly p’d off and has made that clear to whoever drove them down this blind alley.

    Correct.

T4 dominated and Gilles was told to lay back and let Jody win. T5 was supposed to be his WDC ride. Except that by then the ground effect cars were the must-haves as Jones FW07 proved. The flat 12 didn't allow for that and so it become obsolete before the season started.

I expect they have a decent staff but they just don’t set any stretch goals and seem to be very self-satisfied being able to play with race cars all day.

I would gather the team and tell them that continued participation in F1 - and by association, your jobs - is not guaranteed and especially if you’re happy running around in 9th and 10th place.

Leclerc and Vettel confirmed that Ferrari weren't doing proper Quali runs, rather just focusing on the updates. Both were positive about the updates and the car feels better.

I´ve read they already started working in the turbo car in 1979. The T5 was supposed to be just an interim solution. Not a good car but Its results probably were worse than it deserved because when they realized it didn´t stand a chance they didn´t bother to develope it anymore.

I´m thinking that this could be a similar situation: they knew that the 2019 car was a dead end but didn´t bother to start a new one from scratch knowing that there were new and ugly rules for 2021. Then the engine issue appeared and the COVID froze the cars for one more season.

    Sheeeeeet.

You just gave 2 perfect examples that support my theory that Ferrari has been in F1 for too long.
They have become complacent and built a culture of self-satisfaction.
An ambitious team stays focussed and exploits any window of opportunity.
When a top team like Ferrari loses that anger "because there is always next year", it's a sure sign they have been there too long.

Yeah. And tomorrow you´ll say that Ferrari always gets frenzy when things go bad and doesn´t think in the long term.

Trying to help LH with his issues today Mercedes increased the power a bit but not to full qualy attack level it seems.........

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/150483/mercedes-in-the-dark-as-hamilton-struggles-for-pace

Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff says the team is "in the dark" after Lewis Hamilton struggled with an "all over the place" car in Styrian Grand Prix second practice.

Hamilton finished the session in sixth position, over 0.6 seconds slower than his team-mate and Austrian GP winner Valtteri Bottas, who was just edged out of top spot by Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The session was approached differently by teams because rain is expected to wash out Saturday's action and, if qualifying can't then be held on Sunday morning, the grid will revert to FP2.

Wolff said the team hadn't gone for the full qualifying mode with its power unit, but turned the engine up more than it normally would on a Friday.

"We discussed it for a long time, but in the end we went into the session a bit half pregnant," Wolff told Austrian broadcaster ORF. "Not using the full power, but also not cruising very slowly.

"It wasn't full attack, but it wasn't half attack either - we already added a little bit more.

"Let's say, we drove on a performance level that we normally don't drive on Friday.

"We are a bit in the dark, especially with Lewis' time. There's a problem with the car.

"At the moment we don't know. The car is just all over the place in the slow and medium fast corners.

"But we have data channels for everything, and you have to take your time to look at that."

Horner expected the rain this evening then not too bad for Sunday overall. Id hope for a Sunday qualy assuming the schedule of events will support. Possibly not??
