Why is it the 1st and 2nd gears have a life of there own?
Very difficult to get in to these gears, when engine and gearbox is hot its much easier but still notchy.

Is there a one off cure for this problem....thanks

    I think there is...
My F430 recently had F1 to manual conversion by European Auto Group and think of the pieces in one part of the linkage is improved compared to factory stock. I was just thinking yesterday how precise and accurate mechanism was. Only notchiness is first 1st-2nd shift when cold then it's perfect, and that one easily dealt with double clutch little rev. Ask for Art, he may be able to help...

Pretty much every manual Ferrari struggles with 2nd from cold - some find improvement with different gear oil eg Redline

Does the stick have any looseness/play side to side in neutral. If so the plastic clevis/bush may be flogged or broken. Hill Engineering do an aluminium one that made a huge difference on mine.

Great point Red Taxi and that just might be the primary problem.

It should go in with precision and no different to the other gears. It could be:

    Bushing,
    Clutch wear,
Old brake fluid in the slave cylinder,
A broken brake fluid distribution block on the gearbox
    Cable adjustment.

    Thanks for the info everyone.
    Got good and bad news.

Good, bought a Hill Engineering bushing.
Good, ordered 3xUS gallons of Redline 70W90 GL50 gearbox oil.

Bad, the existing bushing is in peices, loose washers are floating about from a previous botch repair.

Really Bad, broke the gear stick as gear knob and locking nut glued and over tightend.

    Bad....Expecting a large ££££$$$$ bill now.

My question as well. Might be the first one ever broken. F1 guys will love this. "Did you hear that, MT knobs are falling off. Glad I have an F1".

    Doh!

That's intensely annoying. Find a good TIG welder and get that one fixed. I would be looking to do that before going for a replacement, which may well not be available any more from Ferrari.

If EAG really are selling reproductions, you could probably get a new gear stick from them too.

Or a machinist could rethread the end of it. Shorter throw but still should work just fine.

It wasn’t me that broke the gear shifter, it was the technician, he said the gear knob had been glued and over tightened, heating still didn’t loosen it.
Must have used a large wrench and then snap.
New shifters sticks are available at a cost approx £360 plus a new knob and lock nut from Hill Engineering at £60 delivered.

Got the car back yesterday and pleased to say the gear shift in 1st and 2nd is perfect now even from a cold start. I did notice it all tightened up when up to temperature but all gears were easy to change into.

Besides needing a new gear lever and chrome knob the common fault plastic bushing (now Hill Engineering part) was in pieces and another bushing close by was also badly worn and replaced. Everything was greased up, then linkage cables adjusted.....sorted!
The exhaust brackets were cracked so replaced with stainless steel ones from Suoerformance.

A happy ending, sort of £££££££
