I was at a friends repair shop in HK, and spotted a beautiful 458 spider without any plates on it. I asked him what was going on and why there was all this tape all over the car. He said they were changing the fuel pump. The car had never been registered and they weren’t sure if it had even been driven.

I opened the door and the spec inside was beautiful! I turned on the key and couldn’t believe my eyes, only 167km on the odometer.

I asked the shop owner to find out the story (car belongs to his friend). He said his friend is trying to sell this car.

The car was originally delivered to Hong Kong and then shipped to a casino in Macau where it sat on display indoors.

The car is in immaculate condition. The price they are asking is extremely reasonable. I’m just thinking for a car that has sat for 6 years, what sort of issues, if any, would one need to look out for?

    Thank you!

How much is extremely reasonable. They could charge a serious premium to my mind

It's hard to say when a car is time worn with no use. If the car hasn't been regularly started and moved around then things like the oil seals may have hardened and the gears in the box/diff may have some pitting in the case hardening. Components like fuel injectors may also have gum if fuel hasn't been passing through and has been left sitting in the injector bodies and lines. I'd put a bore-scope into the gearbox and check the areas of the gearing which hasn't been submerged in oil. 6 years is a long time for anything mechanical to be left standing idle. Condensation from sitting can do a lot of damage internally. If all checks out then I'd do a full fluid change inc brakes before I drove it anywhere.

Love the spec but seems it would be a nightmare to own, given how most cars are that sit forever.

I don't understand people buying cars and not driving them, especially not when the car isn't a limited version.

I'd rather deal with a well driven car and sort out some minor exterior damages from general use than deal with whatever is going to be wrong with a car that's never been driven...

Including paying First Registration Tax (115%) the same as a second hand market for a 2011 with 30,000kms on the odometer.

Thanks for the advice, I will have them take a look and see. I have asked Blackbird if this car is still eligble for the 7 years service package, and will bring it to them for an inspection.

This car was on dispay in a Casino in Macau behind glass, so at least was in a temperature and humidity controlled environment.

Yes it could be a nightmare if the internal checks aren't done properly before the car is moved. Problem is if there was any rust or pitting on the gears and the car been since driven somewhere then all that debris has run through the gearbox bearings. If its been sitting in a temp controlled environment it may not be that bad but it isn't unusual to get some level of condensation and that sits on the surfaces of the un-submerged gears (not submerged in oil) and rusts....pits the case hardening. If it gets noisy in the gearbox or diff you'll know why.

I would say for safety sake all fluids and lines should be changed. Fuel injectors are probably gummed up and oil seals need to be changed. Have a Ferrari dealer that has zero interest in the car bore scope it and check it out. Sitting 7 years with no use is an issue. Personally I'd rather have a car with 10k miles

tsk tsk... listen...a cheap Ferrari is very often for a reason and it very likely will turn it to be very expensive. 6 years old car at delivery miles?? oh boy.

I bought an extremely low mileage 2006 430 in 2017.
While it looked like it came off the showroom floor, the maintenance costs in the first 2 years were absolutely
ridiculous. I would be wary of something with this few miles.

Most likely any internal rust would only be superficial. Have the gas tank drained, all the fluids changed, clean or replace the injectors, and most likely everything will be fine. Try to get at least a two year warranty, though. Because it’s not been driven, there wasn’t opportunity for things to break and be fixed under warranty. It is a beautiful spec.

Thank you for all the replies everyone. After doing some further digging, this car was kept inside a casino in Macau where the local dealer had hoped to attract a buyer after winning big at the tables. Since China turned off the taps to Macau, and less and less people were coming to gamble, the economy took a turn for the worse and this car didnt sell. The Macau dealer wrote off the car, and then sold it to an agent in Hong Kong, who is now in posession of the car. I have asked Ferrari HK (Blackbird) if they will consider still giving the remaining portion of the 7 year service, as well as extending the full warranty of the car. I think if the warranty is extended, and the service package is in place, this could be a worthwhile purchase. The spec is indeed beautiful, as per everyones advice here, will do more digging and checking of the internals wherever possible before pulling the trigger.

So going by the story so far the Casino did exceptionally well over a 6 year period with no gamblers prospering to buy the beloved 458 - the car becoming a write off for both dealer and Casino in the course of Macau becoming no longer a safe gambling destination. So far nothing good has come from the exercise other than perhaps for the Casino operator. In a way the car could be fairly viewed as being a curse to lure the gambler issuing 6 years of bad luck with one more year to run - perhaps to played out at a new venue with a new gambler.

It’s kinda like an Easops fable involving a Ferrari.:D

And the fact they had to change the fuel pump on a brand new car isn’t exactly a great start to the next episode...

If the car is cheap enough to warrant the gamble then it may be worth pursuing otherwise it may prove to be a case where all that glitters is not gold.

It's your money buddy, who knows what this car worths in HK from other side of the world. If you are not worried about the repair and maintenance, just go buy it. End of story, right?

    Good luck.

    Thank you!

I actually went ahead and purchased this car. I was given a 1 year warranty (later extendable as per the power warranty) from the dealer in Hong Kong, as well as the remainder of the 7 years service package. We went ahead and changed all the fluids we possibly could to be sure: Clutch, Gearbox, Engine, Brakes, as well as a new set of tyres. Have wrapped the car in PPF after doing a basic coating on the paint, full leatherique clean and treatment to the interior leather, which now looks fantastic!

So far the car has been absolutely wonderful. I was waiting for the registration from the government before really driving the car, finally received the license 2 weeks ago. I now have 1500KM on the clock.

The only problem to note so far, is one of the leather pads on the roof would not fully collapse while closing. This was fixed by lubricating the spring with some silicon based spray.

I have not yet had a chance to bed the brakes in as the weather hasnt been the best. Waiting for a dry day to put some heat into them.

I am now struggling with where to put the license plate. I was thinking of ordering a sticker plate, instead of installing the bracket. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks for sharing some details of your experience with that NEW 458 as it looks perfect now! If there is a front tow hook location on the right front why not mount a threaded bracket there for the licence plate? Love that Blu TdF paint!

That’s a beautiful 458 in a beautiful shade of blue. Truly glorious.

Rubber seals and other rubbery items are probably shot. Fluids and filters should all be replaced. I’d recommend a thorough inspection of the engine, as moving parts are designed and supposed to move, not sit still for 6+ years. Parts can “glue” and stick to each other during large inactivity periods, and 6+ certainly qualifies as “large”.

I’d certainly tap that for the right price. Even though there’s bound to be some costs to get it roadworthy, it’s not like it has been involved in an accident. Easy stuff to put right for a Ferrari specialist.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.
