was out for a long drive with the f club today, and i felt like the gear changes were not as smooth as i remember them being. if i did the gear change relatively slowly and deliberately then it was ok smooth, and just slotted in. but if i did the change a little faster, it felt notchy as if i was having to push it into place.

dunno if i am hallucinating or what.

what does your 512tr gear change feel like?

Mine seems smooth whether shifting slow or fast. Maybe you should have it checked out.

this car has not had anything other than routine oil changes for years since it runs great.
i got it back 9 months ago from a 4.5 year storage, and it was checked out and ran fine.
it has run fine for the last 9 months.

the notchiness i feel is not consistent, and it is not in just one gear. sometimes its 2nd, sometimes 4th, sometimes 3rd.
my memory of this gear box is that it was always firm and tactile, but no notchiness. dont know if this is related.

it also has picked up an annoying rattle when in third gear - like the gear shift itself is rattling against the gate, which stops if i hold it.

how does one check the bushings or the lubricant?

I asked my mechanic today about your issue. He said it could definitely be a clutch related problem or the linkage may be out of adjustment/ or need repair. Sounds like your problem is caused by one of those issues. Based on your comments it seems it’s most likely the linkage.

ok. the clutch was done about 10 years ago, and maybe 5k miles ago.
maybe there is an issue with that.
is this easily checked or do they need to drop everything out?

The motor does not have to come out to get to the clutch. The clutch doesn’t have many miles on it but still should be looked at/inspected.

You might check the hydraulic fluid level for the clutch the reservoir is in the front trunk, maybe have it bleed/flushed too.

There isn’t a mechanical lineage on the 512 the clutch is activated by a hydraulic slave cylinder.

and with what gears you have this problem?
you have written 2nd, 3rd and 4th, so no with the 5th?

so when the 1st and reverse is ok then may be that the nut ( 104713 ) on the mainshaft got loose

sorry for the delayed response romano - i was banned for a few days ;)

i guess i have felt the notchiness in all gears at one point or another.
just drove it in to work today and when the gearbox was cold it was felt in all gears (altho i did not get to 5th).

i am being very deliberate about the gear changes - no rushing them at all and easing the lever into place to minimize the roughness.

will speak to my tech and note this nut that you mention.

Check the clutch release bearing. It's in a very hostile environment.
