Instead of pressing the cover to let it open, she predictably lifted it and I heard the gear strip. Now when closed it remains raised 25%. Since I can't get rid of Mrs. Ham Hands, what is the procedure to fix this? May be a good time to replace the Becker radio with something better. Any ideas? Thanks all.......

Probably can't buy the part as a part. BUT you may be able to find a gear. Take it apart and see the size, spindle, and teeth. From there you can probably find something that will work. Another option would be to cast one. It should be fairly easy with acrylic resin. You may have to push it in twice to make the teeth go all the way around but still not that hard.

Maybe you should've slapped wifey's hand and said "Bad, bad"!

But then again you could've also gotten back an icy stare and a cold shoulder for days on end; or worse, an assault charge. :(

    Just kidding!

Oh well, it costs too much to have the broken gear replaced at a dealer that my wise and pragmatic F-SB salesman (a very rare, admirable trait) once told me to just leave the cover open and not mind it at all. Not worth the possible expense of $700+, then possibly have it broken again later especially since you have thoughts of a more modern, sensible stereo radio replacement. Don't forget that OEM radio was designed some 20+ years ago and is not very user friendly!

Those plastic gear teeth are too fragile, IMHO being an engineer myself. Ferrari / Pininfarina interior designers during a design review probably specified plastic rather than aluminum in the interest of not adding unnecessary weight (maybe cost too).

Nevertheless I do recall seeing a tutorial online to show how to remove and replace the broken gear(s) but I can't recall where; could've been somewhere in this 599 forum or in another topic within FerrariChat.

20 USD fix, my kid broke the panel the exact same way and I had the gear fixed by my dealer on my 599.

My only idea is to leave the cover open all the time once you fix it.

The little plastic gear is cheap but the required amount of dash disassembly to replace it is unreal. Has someone found a short cut?

Some guys have their hands on pdf service manual. Please search and they would send to your mail address a download link. I don't think it's too difficult once you know the steps to follow.

You could put a rally timer over it. I love those but I’m not sure how that would look.

I just had mine dealt with for the second time by my audio guy this time. I stopped in to see how it was going and the entire center dash was removed. $500.00 (it was $900.00 by Ferrari the first time and I wouldn't admit that to anyone) later it opens and closes perfectly. I don't know if I will have to patience to do it again. Would it be so much to ask for the damn thing to work or fix more easily?

On a related note, my gf slammed the door into the garage wall every time she exited my 612. I glued a pool noodle to that wall. Problem solved.
