Neither fan is coming on today. I have the Birdman fuse box. Checked both fuses and they are fine.

What would cause both to stop working. The one on left was always on and the one on the right would come on after a certain temperature.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot.

Pull both leads from the thermo switch in the bottom of the radiator, touching these leads together should always start them...

I'll point out that the one of the left should not always be on.

Put a jumper on the fan switch sensor at the bottom of the radiator, see if they both come on.

Thanks everyone. Gives me some great things to work on. On the leads, are these under the tank where the radiator cap is (back)? Or, are these leads at the actual radiators at the front of the car?

The left one should only come on either when the AC is turned on, or when both come on from the thermo switch in the radiator. Sounds like someone made it always on to fix another cooling system problem.

Both fans have relays controlling each one. Jumper thermo switch as previously suggested to test the thermo switch.

I think you can just short them together without pulling the wires off - use a small spanner, or even a coin. You won't hurt anything - one wire goes to earth, and the other goes to the primary coil on a relay, which closes the relay when earthed. My guess is the relays are shot - swap one with the horn relay and then short the wires (ign on of course).

You have a QV. You should leave the "modification" where both fans come on alone. Don't go back to one fan with the a/c off.

I shorted the wires and both fans are on. I did order a new temp sensor switch today. Its on back order but should be here in a week. But, i still appear to be running hot. Its hot out theses days but it is getting close to 250 degrees. Thoughts on what i else i should do?

Um....you replace the temp sensor, so that the fans will activate and do their job.

    What am I missing?

Not sure where you ordered yours but it is the same switch used by watercooled VW's in the 80's

Look for one that fits an 85 VW golf and you're good to go

@thorn - i think there is another problem. I shorted the wires - fans now come on but the car is getting close to 250 degrees. I must have another issues going on.

@Dr Tommy Cosgrove - thanks for the suggestion on the 85 VW. I ordered the part from Ricambi today.

Actually try an 80 - 83 Rabbit. The connectors are more correct. Saves you having to cut and crimp something to work with the 85 version.
