Was in the process of purchasing a Euro Front Valence from a gentleman on Craigslist when he mentioned he had a crated old 2V motor that he would sell. He sent some pictures to me later and I agreed to purchase it. Supposedly is a recall removal for bad rings from a former dealership. Owner bought it from a former mechanic there. Wonder how he got it......

Removed from one of these two-valve engined cars that were burning too much oil, and replaced under warranty, most probably.
What is the engine number? (on a plate, inside of the "V", besides the rightmost rear bank induction tube)

That's a super early build for the 1980 injected model year.

For reference, the engine in mine (September 1980 build) is F 106B 040, s/n 00620.

Not likely to run well as is - it would never have been replaced in the first place if it were to be any good. But it sure looks like an ideal candidate to send out to a place like Carobu for use as a core for a 3.5 liter build!

    To Nerofer,

I opined in a thread the other day that the oil burners were 'rebuilt" under warranty.

Do you think Ferrari would have HAD enough engines on hand to replace them all??
    Thoughts….

I just cannot see them investing that kind of capitol.

    Hi Alan,

My guess is that they put a spare in one car, have the faulty one rotated back at the factory, rebuilt, and then used as a new spare...
The factory always built "a certain number" of "extra engines", question is "how many engines" in that extra batch.
Those "extra engines" built for the 3,2 cars ended "not needed", as the 3,2 was very reliable, so you see these brand new Old Stock engines for sale from time to time still in their factory crates.

Guessing the number of engines actually built is difficult, especially for the injected cars, as data is scarce and should be checked on two models: the 3x8 and the "Mondials"; plus the numbering of the engines has to be known: were they numbered continuously, irrespective of the market of destination? US and Euro together, or separately?

Just to give you an example: all 3,2 engines were numbered continuously, irrespective of the variant (there were actually three: US, Euro, Swiss) BUT you have a sudden jump from engine # 3350 or so, to engine # 10400 or so: there are no engine numbered between #3350 and # 10400 (that was at about car #75500, december 1987 production)
Why? I have a number of clues, but nothing definite yet; my guess is that was at the time they decided to number ALL engines consecutively, irrespective of the type (V12 and V8 together) and that they had to "jump" a certain number to join the V12 numbering...

    Not an easy matter...

Trutlands highly values the "cores" for their rebuild program.

But as others have said, I would pick it up as a spare and send it off for "retro engineering" back to the NON CAT spec. camshafts with carbs, and tune for horsepower from there, as a "middle ground" if wanted to stay OEM. Carb sets are getting very expensive these days..

If not a 4.0L build with modern engine management and individual throttle bodies!!
    The sky's the limit.

Damn cool find in any event, and I imagine "well bought".

Cheapest way forward is an engine stand, and a cool piece in the Man Cave.

I would have been accused of being a hoarder by my wife.....

Nice to have a spare setup outside of the car that could be built up while driving and enjoying the car as is! Less stress and pressure. Your Mechanic likes it too because he doesn't have to store the car in his shop.
