I think the pictures in this thread more than answer that question

Yup, the differential was broke for a while and the side plate was under pressure, the more I look at it the more I see stress cracks inside. Once the side plate gave way it let everything else just come apart.

There is a lot of grime in that area, something you wouldn't think of as an oil leak because it isn't wet. But compared to the other side you can tell it was pin drops of oil over time.

Since I am doing my engine out service on my 1990 w/ 30k miles, and inspired by this thread, I decided to go magnet fishing in my diff housing just for sport. I just pulled out not one, but two what I assume to be ring gear bolts. Fortunately neither of them had any impact marks on them, and the diff spins as one would expect. Friction material in the oil, but no metal particles. Looks like I'll be doing a differential as well.

Not claiming anything bad by Shamile or the implication of as is sales. Just talking about gentlemanly behaviour between Fchatters because it was broken before the OP got the car.

The problem was caused by driving her. Just put her in the climate controlled garage and put a blanket over her.
Then go out and pet her once a week! Shame on Shamile for driving her!!! LOL

Good luck Jamie and thanks for sharing with the community! It may be a few weeks before I am able to sleep at nights!

This is quite a shock. If it can drive as normal and be worked on, test driven by the tech and pass....twice!

How does one know if there's an issue?

If that's the case, selling a Testarossa with the major complete is useless. One has to buy with no engine out and do everything..including the diff.

I’ve had friends buy planes with thorough pre buys where even cylinders removed and cams borescoped. On plans cams are issues.

Everything looks perfect and 6 months later their oil analysis shows copper from cams and they are doing $50,000 rebuilds.

If you want a car you can drive with zero worries then look at a Kia, they have 100k warranties. If want an exotic be ready to make repairs that are no ones fault.

Since the engine is out and on a stand, is it worth separating it from the transmission or should I still go in from the back side as if it was in the car?

I know nothing about these cars compared to others. But if it was me I would split it and inspect transmission gears also.

Or buy a Ferrari under warranty ; the Ferrari warranty is great now, on my FF they cover a crazy amount of repairs and I have extended it because I don’t trust Ferrari’s reliability one bit;)

This is exactly what Casey (cb4d) ..something like that did.

He recently bought a Testarossa and found a gear tooth on a regular oil change. He split the engine from the transmission and redid first gear as it was chipped from before he bought it. I think he went ahead and did the diff as well. This is on going as we speak.

You have a kevlar clutch that was done by clutch masters including machined flywheel and new flywheel bolts. The clutch slave cylinder has a new throw out bearing as well. Even though the slave cylinder seals were new at the time, since you have the bell housing off, replace both of them. They're cheap and easy to put on. You've already done the hard stuff taking off the bell housing.

The only reason I asked is that I think you need to take apart clutch and flywheel ..

Mark everything so you can out back exactly the same orientation .. also ...I am sure you know ..torque according to spec

I have had the FF for a year which essentially was my buffer/Ferrari fix till I couple it with either another testarosa or 512tr. Hopefully soon!

If he has to remove the clutch....don't remember that needing to be done to split the gear box, but if so, you'll need new flywheel bolts...one time use only.

Forget to mention, rear main seal was also new at the time. There's no need to do any maintenance there if you don't have to remove the clutch pack.

I’m not splitting case, engine is in. Doing it all from backplate.
