I have both, a turbo 911 and a stick 355 berlinetta. I couldn't choose between them.
Andy, what year 911? Elliott, if you rather defer to a pro for cam timing I understand, on the contrary I feel you are entirely capable of understanding/implementing it. Still, again, very impressive! Love your obsession with achieving the best possible result.
Thanks for the vote of confidence James! I keep learning and I felt with the amount I personally undertook in this segment of work I was already overloaded with new experiences, expenses and time. I felt for this to be the best possible result I would have the head work, re torquing of the heads and the cam timing done by a trusted professional with many years of experience on Ferrari’s to do this task. I learnt a lot from seeing that progress and will next time be able to undertake that process myself. Outside of parts and materials for this job I also spent a lot on tooling up to do the work myself. There are a few more items I would have required to do it all on my own as well. But for now I was content to outsource. 5 years ago I was scared to paint the cam covers so I feel it’s pretty good progress to get to this point and I look forward to the next steps as time and my confidence/experience allows.
I made a little video clip highlighting the restoration contained in the thread. 9:33 seconds covers the current state of the car. I look forward to being out on the road with it soon enjoying the fruits of the labor.
Elliott, what a wonderful video, unfortunately they only let me hit the like button once. Thank you for this!
I believe Tire Rack still carries them. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=P+Zero+System
Not sure where you are from but in Australia they don’t sell the Assimetrico only the front Directzionale, a friend of mine knew someone at Pirelli and we got a 4 sets of tyres sent to us direct from Pirelli with 2019 build dates. It makes the car I think giving it that period correct look.
An updated clip with all the work up to date covered in this thread for those who haven’t been through the whole thing.
My shifter was having an ever increasing rattle, which is probably a combination of bushing wear, adjustment and new gear box plus engine mounts. Decided to order in some parts and overhaul this section of the car whilst some remaining interior parts were sent off for refinishing. Tested out the new hoist and was able to easily drop the shifter assembly due to the working room provided, being up high. It’s now been stripped, cleaned and ready to re install with new bushing and the ‘Andy mod’ shim to reduce place in the bushing. Also removed the shifter rod bar buffer and replaced the 25 year old rubber bushings for new items. Here’s hoping for the best shifting yet and no more rattles in 2nd and 3rd! I also managed to score some NOS Ferrari parts that were hard to pass up. My brake calipers were in very good condition but of course had some marks and chips from wheel removal over the years. A new set in the box was located and purchased from Japan. Won’t install these right away but it’s nice to have a brand new unmarked set. Another great find locally, found a former owner who sold his F355 15 years ago and forgot about his brand new unopened never used car cover- period correct with all tags and the right insignia. Now the trunk is complete as per new and all refreshed. Also have a full set of OEM pedals unused. Not installed for now but another nice to have item. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I had a few items left it refinish. The ash tray was brand new but with OEM coating as was the gate surround and radio bezel. The rest had been refinished by me a few years ago but sent them off so it’s all the same and professionally refinished. I had my shifter bushings all replaced after adjustment alone would not fix the rattle. It was so nice after, it was snug and tight.
Whilst the under trays were off to service the shift linkage I finally got around to cleaning the under carriage, something I had wanted to do since buying the car almost 6 years ago. I’m amazed at how well it came up given it’s age and mileage (65k kms or 40k miles) I think it’s as good as one could hope for.
