I'm curious - how does one explain to the F40 carbon fiber, which has a greenish/yellowish tone to it? Is that because it a very early carbon fiber compound and always looked that way, or did the color on F40's generally change over time from an original blackish/grey look that we now commonly associate with carbon fiber?

I would think it is similar to the carbon fiber panels in my scuderia ..the exopy costing on top of the fiber which is clear with uv and heat starts to yellow. The material that Ferrari uses doesn't have the uv and heat protection

F40 different composition - different era: the inner tub, sills and floor area (where the green toothpaste coloured sealant is) should be all a greyish black. The underside of the front and rear clams, lighter, more yellowish and thicker weave, the air ducts that feed the intercoolers are similar. Up front the bootwell/or luggage compartment is a different finnish again a very matt greyish finish.
The part I think sticks in a lot of people's mind is the rear engine shot, when you see the lower bumper/diffuser from the engine side - where the two small coolers are mounted either side of the exhaust - they are always finished in a very brown/yellowish heavy weave.

I read ages ago in an early design study, that the body and tub was integrated with carbon fiber, Kevlar and honeycomb sandwich structure cells. The car was made with the wide use of vinylester or epoxy and para-aramidic honeycomb matrix fabrics - google is your friend here for explanations.

We can explore more on the F40 thread, don't want to upset the F50 purists with dull F40 chat.

Just as an side, some F50 seat backs were not made of carbon fiber, they were made of a cheap alternative call Twintex that looked like carbon fibre, but was created from recycled plastic including bin bags - who would have guessed guessed that!

F50 104746 the day we purchased it for our VIP client years ago in Northern California.

A neat story about this car is that Microsoft recorded this F50 for sound for the game Forza Motorsport 4.

Can you share how they recorded the sounds? I've read most games just throw cars on a dyno.

I saw this car at the 1999 FCA National Meet in Atlanta back when it belonged to Richard J. Garber.

There is a documentary from a while ago on the Gran Turismo series which showed how they recorded sounds for the game. Perhaps you'll get your answer there, although not so much with a Ferrari.

Gran Tursimo used mainly vacuum cleaners for their soundtrack.

104746 was owned by a Microsoft partner, he says in writing to me that he gave them this specific F50 for use for recording the sound for the Forza Motorsports game, I absolutely believe him.

That said, I agree the sounds in the games is often nothing like the sounds of the cars in real life especially to those of us with a trained ear.

    Hello Marcel,
I'm surprised by this number. You mentionned some years ago that there were 12 F50 before 103097 (which means if I'm not wrong 13 before 103114). I find strange that 7 new F50 SN could be discovered recently, unless these were never sold to clients (destroyed prototypes or cars kept by Ferrari)?
