If you would have told me this a few months back- zero chance I could do it let alone imagine it. Today, I can see a time where a 1000 pushups for a workout is doable. The progress and strength gains are shocking.

    Ok - back on track.....

Since SoCal helped re motivate me with this thread (thanks man).....

I'm 47, 6'5" and 250lbs. I bought perfect pushups from AMZN a month or so ago to start doing this but then sh*t the fan and apparently i used that as an excuse not to start.

First 100 where with PP's and I paid the price for starting with them for the next couple of days. So if you're just starting out fresh my recommendation is to start with regular PU's until you feel you're ready. I share below in case someone starts and wants to quit after the first day or 2.

First PU's I've done in years.

I made the mistake of doing 10 an hour which unfortunately gave my muscles too much time to get stiff again. each 10 hurt instead of being like a warm up set.

I am up to 30 in the morning and 30 in the evening. Feels good though somewhat in pain at times and not any faster in Ferrari. I like it so far.

adding into the pushups, Jeff Calaliere's 400 challenge is fun. 100 pushups, 100 inverse rows, 100 squats, 100 setups. do for best time. Can do any amount in any order but the clock stops when you've done 100 of each. it's humbling. at 15:30 best currently, I'm twice the time of fit guys.

20 somethings, probably not. For most of us here, yes warming up/stretching is essential.

I would also add calfs raises and squats, start with 3 sets of 15 of both and add 5 per week.

Also suggest a post workout smoothie with protien immediately when done. Helps with muscle recovery and muscle nutrition. Could serve as a meal replacement as well.

Just saw this thread. I jacked my shoulder a couple of months ago, so I have backed off. But prior to that my M/W/F early morning (after showering, but before putting on my scrubs) was 45 standard pushups, then a two minute rest, then 30 diamond pushups (2 minute rest), 35 decline push ups (feet up two stairs and then two minute rest), another 35 decline push ups (feet just up on one stair, another rest) then 55 incline push ups (lads two stairs up). On a good morning would add 5-10 onto one or several of these.

One key is to lock your elbows out on each up stroke (otherwise easy to cheat) and go as deep as your shoulders will allow.

    (I'm 58, 170 lbs, 5'10")

Theres no burn quite like the "I haven't done pushups for a while" burn that happens the next morning. I always allow for 5 days of recovery after my first full day, then the rest are fine.

My perfect pushups arrived this week - uh they do work.

100 pushups? That will take me a while to get to.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

I prefer them to regular. You can go deeper and they are comfortable and stable.

This was a really great addition to my exercise routine. I am up to 90 every other day. Good coming from 20 per day. I add it to my run or workout.

funny... I came across an article recently about 100 pushups per day....
    thought../ that's Brilliant!
then this one came out shortly thereafter....
    https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a32118553/100-pushups-30-days-challenge-jumprope-dudes-youtube-video/

"It's great for discipline, but it's not so great for your body."

And doing 100 pushups every single day is not exactly practical in the long term. "It's extremely taxing on your body," he says. "If you're constantly working the same body parts and not giving them time to recover, they get fatigued, you can lose strength, you can get injured, and overall you're just wasting your time, because rest and eating right are actually how the muscles recover and build back up to make you stronger."

will probably start today anyways. see what happens....

I also bought the Mens Health "building muscle after 40".
its a pretty good cook book.
however I'm pessimistic about "building muscle".... I turn 50 this month.
Probably not going to pack on a bunch of muscle at this stage. I don't do T / GH / etc. Have not researched the science on it (yet).
    just looking for more definition

The actual perfect push-up workout routine is every other day as well.
