Do you want it to park a car for space, or serious work? For serious work 2 post gives complete access!

4 post no need to bolt to the floor.
For work 2 post has its beneifits in terms of wheels off easy, but then spring a car on a two post with wheels hanging is not good.
In a 4 post you can get a built in rail jack that gets 2 or 4 wheels off the surface.

I have a free standing (not bolted to the floor) 4-post lift. There were no problems with a car on top from a 5.8 earthquake in August 2011. By sheer coincidence, I was standing at the rear of the lift when the earthquake hit. No drama. Get the widest, tallest lift that will fit. In a contest between your head and the lift, the lift will always win. Same for outside mirrors on your car and the lift side columns. The jack bridge is a good idea.

Image Unavailable, Please Login I don’t care for my mid-lift — wish I had the type where arms on outside posts and I can swing them under the car. Not lay on my back and try to pry heavy arms up with my finger tips after lining up planks of wood for height.

I don't bolt mine down and they come with wheels you attach so they can be moved around as required. My neighbour moves his forward every summer to park his snowmobiles behind his cars and moves the hoist back in the winter when the cars are stored.

Found mine seemed much studier once bolted down. Felt better that way.

Also without it bolted down, the lift tends to “walk” a bit and cars are driven on and off it.

The 2 posts is the professionals choice, give access to any area of the car but I dont like lifting older cars on those lifts. If you have the concrete base and have it professionally installed and plan to work on newer cars it may be the best choice.

Myself I have a 4 post and prefer it due to the age of my "collection" of older vehicles (1956-1986). I hate lifting older cars on a 2 post lift and especially the Porsche 356 or E-type they just dont have lifting points. Do also get a rolling bridge jack and you will be able to do almost every job on that 4 post lift.

Pending what work you wanna do; having lifted a series of cars on the QuickJack I would say it is one of the better options if you want flexibility. Just pack and stash the lift as you may and use it wherever you find a flat spot. Superb for engine and suspension/wheel work.

Sorry, your question was about bolting so here it go: "No I do not bolt it down make sure your lift support free standing though, mine do". :)

I always thought having a pit would be a cool and safe way to go, but doesn't really help if you have to drop an engine form the bottom, and does nothing for extra parking.

Bear in mind that the shop floor has to have the right concrete pad under it for a two post to mount to and not have the fasteners pull out or break the floor. No matter how you lift a vehicle the weight will be biased front or rear. The hoist will constantly be trying to tip so whatever it's fastened to better be good. Typical house garage pads are not thick enough so that's something to consider. Some 2 post lifts have long extended mounting legs which can stop that (but you can trip over them) and others have a small plate as a base.

Smart- where do you position it?

Is there really an issue on the suspension leaving a TR on a two post lift for a 4month winter or is this a bit overblown?
