    ok
so I got the replacement pads for Christmas and I have been wanting to replace the pads front and rear
with the entire universe shut down I said go for it
wasn't that bad, did not need anything special with regards to tools
    took around 4 hours
the replacement pads will have a notch for the front brake sensor but it will not be a tight fit
so you will have to use some kind of adhesive to keep the sensor in place
took the car out for a test hop to check basic operation and it came back code 1 no discrepancy
I found the stock pads a little wanting for a car that can go so fast
no brake fade mind you it just didn't have the same bite as my 512 TR has
I took some pictures of the job if anyone wants them I will post them
recommend you use a set of vise grips on the rear butterfly spring
it makes it so much easier to drop it since there isn't a lot or room back there to start with
    anyway that's it for now
car has 41k plus on it
    rides great

yes I did go with the R4S pads front and rear
haven't really driven the car that much with what's going on and all
need to drive around 100 miles or so and have them bed in so to speak
    hope this helps
like I said in the post I have some pictures I can post if someone needs them
    until then

    Clyde,

You'll be happy with those pads. When I tracked my 550, I used R4 up front and R4S in the rear. I still have that same combination of pads on the car even though it only sees street duty now.

What wheels do you have on the car? Reason I ask is if they would support a big brake kit. Taz has aftermarket CCBs and I have a Brembo upgrade. Wheels may be pricier than the breaks depending on direction you lean.

We were always satisfied with the Porterfield options when we sold them at Ricambi America (we no longer carry that line of pads). R4 for anything aggressive -- but with the 'risk' of some squeal and more dust, and R4S for the street when low dust and quiet were the priority.

I have experienced that driving the car regularly with the original pads make the squeal go away. Are the original pads better or worse than the Porterfields? Which should I buy next time I change?

You can fit a larger Brembo brake set to the 18" wheels, but the size is limited compared to the 19" wheels. Do not remember if the max size is 380 mm or 355 mm with the 18" wheels.

I have 355mm and they would not fit the factory modulars, that’s why the PO put on HREs.

DSD- That does not sound correct. There is plenty of room in the factory 18" modulars for larger brakes and 355 mm is not that large.

Affirmative, and those 575M wheels have the same specs as the 550 wheels.

There is more clearance with 1 piece wheels than 2/3 piece. Depending on the wheel design & caliper design a 380mm rotor will fit under an 18" wheel.

*Edit* The offset of a 2/3 piece wheels so the mating surface is pushed outside of where the caliper sits also plays a major role in clearance for big brakes.

Lots of room in there, it appears. No telling what someone will tell you when they are selling a car, especially a Ferrari. The 18" modulars and the 550/575M 18" wheels have exactly the same offsets.
