John, I am in regular contact with A&E and ICU people, also Professors of respiratory medicine at major teaching hospitals. I was involved in a respiratory health charity for 17 years and have stayed in touch with a number of the amazing people I worked with. Yes, they're all very worried, but then again, not a month passed in my 17 years when we were not very worried about several issues at once.

I was very glad to see the back of the bureaucrats in state and federal health departments or the treadmill of plonker health ministers, who (with rare exceptions) quickly became captives of those bureaucrats. It's because I worked at that particular coal face, that I am so concerned about what's happening now.

I have a close friend who's the head of emergency at a major Sydney hospital, he's a man who lives on the precipice of mental breakdown, such is the stress load. Any health system is a complex decision tree of impossible choices about other people's lives, with a counter side of constant competition for funding, of which there is never enough. Despite that, Australia is very fortunate to have one of the best systems in the world.

My concern in this current crisis is that we have succumbed to panic, with too little consideration of the downstream effects. Manipulation of statistics to maintain the panic is now an imperative for the media, politicians and bureaucracy. Yesterday, the NSW police chief let slip that the current lockdown laws will be in place for 90 days. If that happens, there are going to be tens of thousands of businesses that will fail and millions of livelihoods (and lives) destroyed.

That economic disaster will lead to yet more government intervention and the nationalisation of industries, as happened post 1930. We are circling the drain already.

We're doing this for a flu virus that is very obviously no worse than H1N1, SARS, and others in the past, despite the scary videos and statistics that the media has carefully and conveniently constructed for easy digestion. It saddens me that so many people can't see that they're being manipulated.

While you're all sitting at home in lockdown, read some George Orwell books again, starting with Animal Farm.

because they all went through SARS and remember that; because culturally they all put on a mask as soon as the get a sniffle; but mostly because they TRUST their governments, who moved swiftly, and because they all did what was asked of them. Simple really. But we’re ‘free’ to circulate what some anti-vaxxer posts on the web as ‘fact’...

So over 5000 deaths in 2 weeks is no worse than the flu which peaks at about 1700 a week in the US?

We don't know, because of those who died, how many deaths were the result of existing co-morbidity issues? It's all very well to say 5,000 people died as a result of covid 19, but would they have died anyway?

Interesting in these figures the age of those that die as a result of covid 19 is difficult to glean from the plethora of socialist hysteria.

    I found this interesting:

    https://www.theguardian.com/law/2020/apr/03/man-eating-kebab-on-bench-among-50-people-fined-in-nsw-and-victoria-for-violating-coronavirus-laws

Civil liberties curtailed by a brazen police force given almost unlimited power with citizens under almost house arrest. Reminds me of this:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enabling_Act_of_1933

And the Government chugging along bailing out whomever they please, no checks or balances. It's a salient reminder that without a bill of rights, we have none.

Alice Drury, a senior Lawyer at the human rights law centre: "Any powers that curtailed civil liberties in this time needed to be grounded in solid medical evidence as being absolutely necessary for protecting public health".

Yeah, they may have died 6 months later, enough time to sort out affairs etc. The comorbidity issue isn't relevant in the statistics. Most elderly have a chronic illness but most have a reasonable quality of life and live at home. These patients are obviously more vulnerable with Covid or any other acute illness and will fall off the perch before others. Their (relative) premature deaths are due to Covid infection

A mate of mine called me this morning (53 yo), he was one of the recent arrivals from the US, self isolated in a CBD hotel, then began to feel quite unwell. Has a background of asthma, reasonably controlled. Was transferred to hospital, COVID 19 positive, ended up with severe respiratory distress and was close to being intubated but slowly recovered over last couple of days.

I think if we knew the real figures out of China re number infected and deaths it might scare some of you a bit more.

For Italy, Spain and the USA to have such high figures the Chinese figures are ********.

Wait till it hits Africa and other third world areas.

Yes, but the co-morbidity thing is probably very similar in the case of seasonal flu as well, and I was comparing the Covid death rates with Seasonal Flu.
