Fchaters Can someone please advise where I can get the snap-ring lock that goes on the half shaft? I’m preparing to do my joint boots and can’t find the ring anywhere....btw I didn’t by any Kit yet, so recommendations for the Boot Kit are welcome as well. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I bought mine from a Porsche dealer. Same axles as 911 Turbos of the era and they were available in a couple of days from my local Porsche dealer.
Have a look on superperformance uk web site, they have the boot kits and other bits for the drive shafts
Do you have the reference? ....and do you remember if the snap rings provided on the kit fit 308 shafts? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Once you get it apart you could measure the snap ring and buy from Mcmatser Carr https://www.mcmaster.com/retaining-rings
Are you referring to the banding rings on the outside of the boots? if so, I purchased mine at NAPA. Also, purchased the tool to tighten them.
I decided to bring extra nuts and bolts, boots and proper bands/clamps from Superformance, snap rings from mcmaster and 4x100ml of Liqui Moly Grease from Ebay. Roughly the "kit" to do the 4 boots with proper rubber, 8 clamps, 4x grease, 10 snap rings and 4 extra joint bolts/nuts comes to a total of more or less $120 Thanks for all the help
The good boot kits come with all of the parts needed, boots, clamps, grease and circlips. Brian Brown San Francisco Motorsports
He's referring to the C clip that retains the Belleville washer against the CV joint. Factory one does not have ears, I've used replacements from McMaster or Bell metric. Don't recall the size off hand.
Hey OP were you able to source the correct size improved snap-ring and did you happen to get the part number? My axle is currently out of the car and I want to replace the old ring. Thanks!
From memory they are 22mm just need to measure id of the groove and width, far easier with a conventional circlip.
Me too. They had to order the right clamps and I bought the whole box when they came in. Screw the running around looking for a clamp.
The OD is a little over 28mm and the groove is just under 27mm. So I ordered three different sized packs from McMaster-Carr and will report back on the correct one.
Hi, good solution is a standard part. Size 28. Not neccessary to use stainless steel like my photoes: Image Unavailable, Please Login Paul
OK got my assortment of rings from McMaster-Carr and Paul01 is right on - it's a 28mm OD snap ring. PN is 98541A130 and a pack of 10 is about $6.50 + shipping. So you have enough for 4 axles plus some breakage.
Hope you're not selling your car soon, someone will say it's not factory correct and ask for 3K off. . Look so much easier to remove/replace than the original no-eared one.
Hi dwhite, yes, i am trying to sell it since years. But all interested guys want to see the drive shafts first. The original clips have a big disadvantage: Mechanics often do not use proper tools. They use screwdrivers... Maybe the clips are bend but they use it again. And this is dangerous. Btw the photoes above are from 348, same game. In 308 i used the same clips: Image Unavailable, Please Login Paul
I like the eared circlips and would use them if necessary. Having changed the boots and grease in both my 308 and Boxer, I know what a bit of a pain the original ones are. Luckily mine were not mangeled because, I don't think the boots or the grease were ever changed prior to my ownership. However the originals probably reduce unsprung weight a bit, which is essential in 308 acceleration. ;-)
