Assuming the season does not get entirely cancelled and they try to have at least 8 races for a WDC, which ones will be held? We further assume some races will move in the calendar (e.g. China to the fall).

I tried to see this from a legal point of view, and I simply put the last 8 races scheduled on the calendar.
I'm sure the organisers of these venues can enforce their contract with Liberty, if they wish.
Since the other GPs have voluntarily cancelled or postponed their race, they would have no priority if the championship shrinks to 8 GPs.

Interesting viewpoint. Didn't think of that. Smart.

I didn't pick Singapore and Monza (being in the last 8) because of the crisis. Singapore probably won't allow a race to happen just yet and Italy might still be in trouble or reluctant to open up.

    1. First,... I think it's likely the entire season will be cancelled.

After that,... I think it comes down to 2 more options...

    2. Run the later races as previously scheduled. I don't see how the can change a tracks race date without the tracks approval, and changing dates would be costly... and likely a logistical / legal nightmare.

    3. Reschedule, but I'll be complicated. Ideally you would run races close together on consecutive weekends. I.E., Canada, USA, Mexico... European races,... asian races. I just don't believe they'll get this arranged.

As a tangent,... would they even bother with a mini season? 4 or 5 races...

I could see that happening for the teams to get some $ back. They're basically paid per GP.

A year off will allow F1 to ask itself some tough and honest questions.

    Which is no bad thing

There will be no races in 2020. This virus won't be gone that fast.

Chase Carey just sent out a statement: There will be between 15 to 18 races this year. Even if he is roughly half right, that still gives us a full WDC counting season of 8.

    Yeah!

Chase Carey sounds like the captain of the Titanic. Him too couldn't believe his ship was sinking.

    LOL

Wasn't there a plan for Bahrain to host 2 GPs this spring as in back to back and the 2nd would be a GP of somewhere else?

It is an option: Stage more than 1 GP in a venue where there is no virus. Shanghai for instance. One could be the Chinese GP and the other one the Asian GP. Just saying.

    I doubt any!

As said above countries won’t give up their rights even if they are allowed to run and
    - I’d be surprised if Asia allowed any as this will be all to recent; even if they continue the current trends;
    - America won’t allow any especially USA as they are about to top the leaders charts so won’t be over anytime soon. Central and southern America haven’t even got going yet unfortunately!
    - Europe, who knows but I doubt the authorities in any country will have an appetite for mass gatherings this year even if it’s brought under some semblance of control. (We/UK have just told all medical vulnerable to isolate for 12 weeks!)
    - fortunately no races in Africa as that is unfortunately shaping up to be a true humanitarian disaster.

    next race, Australia 2021!

There is at the moment no certainty that any country in Europe will accept hosting sporting events with large public attendance before August.
So I don't know where Chase Carey thinks Liberty is going to run its 15/18-GP championship.
Le Mans 24-hour race having moved from June to September at the French government's request gives a clue.
That's the largest public audience to a race in France with roughly 250/300K tickets sold.

In Carey's defense he also stated that the season will clearly go beyond its current end date. So your news about Le Mans fits the picture. Euro races will be moved to the fall and Middle East/Asian races towards the winter.

If FIFA can move the World Cup to Christmas, the FIA could move a GP into December. :)

I set an end date to the poll. Deliberately to get some guesses in before hind-sight. Everybody will know the answers by August.

That's the only way they can get anywhere near 15-18 races.

They may also be looking at "gaming" the contact stipulations with sponsors for the teams benefit. I suspect the sponsors are guaranteed a certain number of races...

I suspect the contrapositive:: sponsors only pay when a race is run.

That's difference without much distinction. 2 races per weekend,... they pay double per weekend.

If this is indeed the plan,... I don't think the sponsors will be pleased.

Two races per weekend at the same venue would go a long way to pay the teams with TV money and get exposure to the sponsors. And the logistics would be way simpler of course as the teams only need to set up once. It might happen.

I mean they did qualifying and the race for Japan in one Sunday. Who's to say they couldn't do that twice and give the second run a new name?

I doubt it will be possible to run until 2021.

I don’t think anyone wants to watch two races at the same track the same weekend. More than likely the same results...

two dif tracks the same weekend I’d be down for.
