Yesterday a fine looking 1974 boxer arrived at my place to be returned back to its original Nero exterior and a major service. I took it for a test drive of course. The roads were clean and the sun was shining, I took a number of photos prior to disassembly.

Wanting to get it ready for paint asap. The engine will be coming out shortly.

I found several build sequence numbers throughout the car from interior pieces, exterior trim, clamshells etc. All numbers match, its a very nice example.

I wish I could transfer the near perfect red paint to my 79!

Sequence number 147 which is hard to see on the headlight mask but its there on both and numerous other components.

Clean engine bay, Ill tidy up wires and other things during the service.

Head light masks will be satin black as will the top of the bumper.

Number 147 on the lower bottom flat just left of the indent in the headlight opening.

Love the turn signal lenses. What years did those come on the Boxer?

Market specific. You can change yours if you buy new lenses from Eurospares. Its a bit of a chore to shape the edges to fit your car because the openings vary slightly and the new lenses aren't absolutely perfect. The lesnes are held into the housings with clear silicone. My 79 had amber lights when I got it and I could tell they had been changed, Ill assume from clear to allow it into Canada in 79 and my tail lights had been swapped. That was the extent of the modifications to get it into the country. So with italian gauges in the dash I thought Ill go italian market which is clear.

Something I noticed on these two 365's is the front signals are also park lamps. 1157 bulbs and sockets so they are dual purpose but its factory. All the other 512's Ive seen here and in my travels that have dual purpose front lamps have had them modified to do so during a conversion. So I undo that whenever possible. Always something new to be found on these cars.

Your car being swiss are supposed to be amber but no biggie if you change them.

How long has it taken from receiving the car to the stage it's in now? I love seeing these posts. I wish I could send you my TR.

That's a very clean Boxer, almost as nice as mine. ;-). Looking forward to watching this one progress. I remember the last black Boxer that you did, it turned out really nice. I will look into the clear lenses, thanks.

Damn impressive, I guess since you have done many of them, you have a system down and a way to stay organized.

Notice the running change to the block casting between engine number 31 and 141.

First pic is engine number 31 with a flat lower water jacket. This is the area directly over the left differential side support.

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

This is number 141, note the indents in the larger jacket to clear the side cover fasteners. The downside is you cant get the left side support and crown gear out with the engine mounted to the gearbox. Later the side support was reduced in diameter and the rear of the box became the new path for the crown gear and differential.

    Good day Paul,

I noticed that the distributor has dual pickups which differs from my 512BB and a number of other 512's I have seen (via pics). Are the dual pickups actually used or is only one used? That being said, I wonder why Ferrari changed the distributor to a single pickup on later cars/models? Have all the 365's you seen had the dual pickup distributors? Just curious.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Only the inboard one is used which is the same location of the 512 pickup. I can only speculate why it has two and one theory is the Countach used 2 pickups and a twin coil tower cap. Since the boxer came into production after the Countach maybe it was easier to use currently made distributor housings and it was cheaper to give away a pickup than machine them specific for ferrari with one and lambo with 2? I believe the countach distributor rotates the opposite direction so there would be some internal changes to the direction the weights swing.

Detailed the engine and box today to suit the rest of the car as a nice clean driver and show worthy, didn't get in too deep.

Swapped some fasteners to the correct black washers and yellow zinc nuts. I have the correct hose clamps in stock as well which to me is the finishing touch. I need to finish the belt service, change some seals and set it aside for when the body returns from paint.
