Yes, I've been seeing the numbers (or lack thereof) in warmer climates closer to the equator such as in the southern US as well as India among others. I think end of this month it will start to calm down in the northern hemisphere and by May not much elsewhere in higher northern hemisphere latitudes.

With 55 deaths in the US, that would mean 1 in a 1,000 die on high end or 1 in 10,000 on the low end by using the 50k or 500k numbers.

For comparison, the flu this season has caused 36 to 51 million cases of which 1 in a 1,000 die. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm

So if the corona has killed 55 out of 500,000 infected, then it's less deadly than the flu.

We both know those numbers are not accurate. We have not been hit properly yet by the virus and the government has failed to test anyone properly. I’m sure we will be fine but being French and seeing what’s happening home we can’t compare this to a flue anymore it’s stronger and more vicious.

That and in the case of the US the fact that leadership wants to keep economy going as long as possible And also in the case of the USA that the country is so big it’s like many counties at once. Like California is bigger than France, Texas is so much bigger than France ans Spain combine. It’s crazy

in the US, goes without saying. Trump ignoring self isolation advise!!!

in the UK, they know full well you can’t really stop the spread of a virus once it’s out of the bag; so what you have to do is manage the rate of spread to manage the numbers that will end up
In hospital against their available resources.

I fully suspect we will get further measures early next week but will will look like restriction in gatherings, isolation of elderly, etc. Makes little overall sense to shut school for all the obvious reasons (Australia have taken this route).

my biggest question though is what exactly will trigger lifting the various restrictions around the world? The virus won’t have gone away, so what will trigger this lifting???

So then it must be a fairly mild infection if 500000 have it but don't show any significant symptoms. On the other hand, in the US, currently 36,000,000 case of the flu, 370,000 hospitalizations, 22,000 deaths. When asked why we are so concerned about that a Dr being interviewed on TV said, "We have a vaccine for the flu and treatments." Of course, we don't know where CV-19 is going, but with 60 deaths so far in the US there is a long way to go before this matches the flu. One thing I read is that viruses tend to mutate into less deadly forms. The logic is that since the more deadly strains kill off the carriers, the carriers quickly become too ill to be walking around spreading the virus and are more easily identified and isolated.

Yes and its probably better just to call them on the phone, rather than visiting ..

Plus I really cannot get my head round this sheep mentality to buy toilet roll, does hoarding it cure it, or is it just plain stupidity..or Iam I missing something.

    STOP, please STOP downplaying this.

Last year influenza in Italy caused 809 to go into intensive care and killed 198 people.
    https://www.infodata.ilsole24ore.com/2019/08/22/andata-la-stagione-influenzale-tutti-numeri-italia/

Yesterday evening in all of Italy there were 1518 people in intensive care for COVID-19, which so far has claimed 1441 victims.

I really don't understand the UK's strategy. AFAICS this 'Herd Immunity' idea is just like vaccination without an actual vaccine - completely untested and exposing everyone to the full strength virus. It just doesn't seem responsible. And why tell the over 70s to self isolate for 4 months? Surely we should just lockdown for 2 weeks like they are doing now in Italy and Spain and has worked in China. Yes it's two weeks of pain and economic stagnation, but after that we should be through the worst. And if we do it now before we get to Italy levels of infection it should be much less destructive.

Obviously we will have to ban anyone from the US coming to the UK for some months, because the US is just going to be a disaster. Or may be we could just chlorinate them?

Evidently its FOMO, big packs take up a lot of room ,so when the shelf is bare you really notice it .whereas hand sanitizer you can't see if its run out, small the space for it.

Plus people feel 'in control' somewhat by preparing for the future..

    Fear of missing out.
