So in a couple weeks it's time for the engine out service on my 92 348 this kit? New Major Service Kit Ferrari 348 w 140Amp Denso Alt TS TB GTS GTB Spider | eBay and add the tensioner bearings PT-348 - Pulley Tensioner by: Hill Engineering - Hill Engineering or this kit? Ferrari Parts : 348 30K Service Kit #1 (Delco) : Ricambi America Are the hill eng. tensioner bearings really a must? Current bearings on the car are probably OEM Ferrari that are at least 8 years old. And aren't making any noise
are they life time bearings? Also i realized i linked to two different kits based on alternators that was just a mistake.
Do you believe in life time anything? No, it is not, but I would (for my own cars) replace the bearings every other time I do a major. I would not do that with regular F bearings.
Don't forget to check your water pump. If you see any weeping it's time for a rebuild or new one. Do it now. Also, check your alternator bearing. Again easier to replace now and its a cheap part. If you do not use Hill tensioners you are just rolling the dice.
thanks guys! Question on the water pump, i plan on rebuilding it either way. IS it strait forward disassemble, press on new seal, clean, reasemble? I see there is a tool to press on the seal, is it needed? Either way $80 for the kit, $90 for the tool, is better than $1200!
The 348 water pump is really tricky to rebuild. And it requires a special seal tool for $100. Unless you have done this before, I would not start with this model.
IMHO, the 348 water pump is very, very easy to rebuild. If you use the "repair kit", you don't even have to take the pump apart, as the kit sold by Ricambi, Eurospares etc is not a repair kit. It's only a seal and gasket....No new bearing. As a bearing has a life time of apr. 12-16 k hours, my wild guess is most of the pump rebuilders just replaces the seal... Start with demounting the impeller. Use some sharp tools to take out the seal. The 100$ tool to press the new seal in Place, is actually a 3$ 32 mm socket....prolly found in your tool box...(Stooges style wrenching???) The seal is a Nissan Diesel #21030-99001. If you want to take the pump apart, start with loosening the set screw. Then use a hydraulic press to get the shaft out of the pulley. If not done before, use the press again to get the seal out. I haven't found a sorce for the shaft/bearing yet, maybe some one here knows where to find it. It's discontinued by the factory. That's looks very straight forward, thanks! I am guessing without a bearing though it's almost pointless. No numbers/markings on the bearing?
I agree, but as far as I know, you can't find the bearing. The shaft and bearing is a one piece unit. The shaft is actually the inner part of the bearing. However, there is a very similar shaft/bearing from the manufacturer. The only diff. is on the part that goes in to the pulley. My guess is that it can be sleeved and turned to the right dimension. I got the drawing from the manufacturer the other day. They can do the right shaft if you order 500-1000 pcs of them.....The "wrong" shaft they do have in stock. I still don't think that the guy rebuilding the pumps for 80$, replaces the shaft/bearing....
I'm not sure about the rebuilding of the waterpump. That's something you definitely don't want to go wrong with. A new one is safest bet, but if you are absolutely certain the rebuild is as good as new then...
Dick Jordan replaced the bearing and the seal for $100, but he is now retired. His secret was he bought large volume of generic bearings and machined them to fit the pulley end. He is a machinist. That is why he could afford to do it for very little. He rebuilt only water pumps and he did it for all makes. We miss him. There is no after market source for that 348 bearing. None.
He is messing with you. The bearing source he has needs to have modification by a lathe to fit the 348 pump. Right now, if you need a pump, just buy one from Ricambi who sells a better after market one for 1/2 price.
Hi Ernie, Actually I need a bearing for my Thema 8.32. This one looks very similar to the Thema's. I will check with Ricambi and see, maybe it will work. Thanks for your input.
Seriously just buy the aftermarket water pump from Ricambi. A lot of development time went into the improved impeller on John's water pump. It is a FAR SUPERIOR design to the stock F119 water pump impeller, and it is priced reasonably.
