And for those ("Laguna Beach" Boys?) who believe that stampings on the 512 gear selector housing was just one or two but not four (4) digits, here's another (potentially confusing?) pic.

thank you marcel for the clarification. I only wonder about the different sizes of the letters/numbers.
the last photo has equal size numbers/letters
the first photo shows 256 C N 4, but under the N there is also an other stamp ( when I see it right ? )

Under the "C" and under the "N" you can see part of the round circle (ring) of the die used, apparently hammered quite heavily and strong. No other stamp there, it's the "ring" or "circle" that you can see.

The factory has more than just one set of punchings (dies/tools). And yes, engine blocks too were sometimes re-stamped or overstamped. That's exactly why it is so important to keep perfect track of all of these parts and objects.
    Also called due diligence.

    Sample photo only.

Marcel in #699 photo 1 and #700 photos 1 and 2 what is the other hallmark(possibly R D), was it stamped when the engine was overhauled?

Le Mans scrutineering stamp (of engineer Mr. D. Riu).

(PS: A bit similar to the older CSAI scrutineering stamp on an engine, see sample photo below, red arrow).

Coming back to post #705 and the Le Mans scrutineering stamp of Italian CSAI scrutineer & engineer Giovanni De Riu please see below scan of the official Le Mans engine verification sheet (Fiche de Cylindrée) signed by Mr. De Riu for 512 chassis #1048 and engine (type 261 C N. 27). On the bottom right (red box) is engineer's De Riu full name, address in Milan, title and signature listed ("DR" stamping above the word Signature, green arrow).

Marcel a mind bending amount of illustrated numerical detail and the distinct advantage of knowing the 'cast of characters' involved is a priceless resource. Thank you for sharing some of that knowledge here!

Beautiful motori but was there any particular reason why those exhaust headers were typically painted white? Surely heat resistant paint came in other colors? Easier to spot oil leaks?

when Mario Andretti got his introduction to Enzo Ferrari they first went out and ate a big meal together. Then after the meal they immediately went to the track and Mario put on a fine test show with the race car. Enzo Ferrari was said to be very impressed by this effort done by Mario on a full stomach!

What ?!? Blue nylocs ??
Talk about real cornfusion ! :D

In all seriousness, while I’ve never been much into motor racing, I do love history, including all things (vintage) automotive and truly enjoy seeing all these “archeological” details Mr. Massini and other are graciously willing to share with us here.
    Thank you all !

Here's Ignazio Giunti on 14 February 1970 testing 1002 (512 S Spider at the time) at Monza.
Chalk marked inside door is the number "1002" (red circle).

    Speaking of numbers (part 4)..............
Here's 512 S Berlinetta long-tail #1022 on 11/12 April 1970 tested by Jacky Ickx and Ignazio Giunti during the Le Mans test days. It was raining cats and dogs.
See number "22" (for chassis #1022) on the right front (red arrow).
