Did somebody actually respond and buy this thinking it was the real 1046?

I hope not. Seems that several people did not do their homework regarding 1046.

I recall seeing the advert in a 1990s edition of Classic and Sportscar but I had no idea at the time of whether it was real or not. $950k must have been roughly market considering #1030 sold for $995k in 1994. Its interesting that just 26 years later, with the advent of the internet, it seems impossible that anyone wouldn't be able to easily access this cars history.

That ad is from September 1996.

Sure and todays its super easy to google any Ferrari and find screeds of information. Back in 1996, not so much. You could contact an expert such as yourself, buy an out of date book or what, rely on Hajduks claims that it was as last raced or whatever. Apart from the fake chassis and fake parts and fake engine it probably was lol. For all its faults, the internet has been a wonderful invention for sharing information.

Marcel, you know perhaps why the engine number looks so strange?
261 is in one row, then a little more up the C, then the N same size as the 261 and same level and then 22 smaler letters
    I wonder about this

That is absolutely normal and there's nothing wrong at all.
Please do not try to apply (use) 2020 standards, where everything is perfect, robotized, and bullet proof. These stampings happened 50 or more years ago and by hand.
Here are a few more such stampings on 512 and 712 engines.
