I'm currently running Marchal Equilux 125 headlights on one of my cars but I find them pretty marginal for driving at night, especially on dipped beam.

The headlights were restored before I bought them and they're fitted with what look like the correct Marchal diffuser bars. They came with Narva R2 bulbs like this, except that I have the yellow versions (which probably doesn't help): https://www.autoaibe.lt/batteries/light-bulbs/narva-49321-bulb-r2-24v-p45t-55-50w-16310

Recently I found with another car that fitting modern bulbs in old headlamps gave very poor results, because it seems the beam you get is completely dependent of the precise design and position of the bulb filaments.

So I would be interested to hear what bulbs people are using in these headlights, particularly anyone who's been able to get good illumination on dipped beam.

Right, the 24V bulbs are for the Mog, don't buy them by mistake.

those bulbs you have are 12 V 45/40 W ( in europe called bilux ), there are available bulbs with 12 V 60/55 W ( in europe called H 4, but with then H 4 socket and not bilux socket ) with the same socket ( https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01IHQJXQ0/ref=dp_prsubs_1 )
also have seen bulbs with H 4 sockets with 12 V 100/90 W but those not with bilux socket :(
