Does anyone have history or knowledge of this car? Currently for sale at Exclusive Motorcars in Los Angeles.

    Here’s a link to Dino 04574: https://inventory.emcars.com/vehicles/79/1972-ferrari-246

Looks like a nice example from the photos but knowing the history is important as well as what is the actual condition of the body shell and mechanicals. Asking $350K. I don’t see any mention of original tools and books. Maybe Marcel or Matthias has information they would share. Looks like a U.S. spec Dino. Has the correct contour headlamp covers though!

One thing odd thing to me are the parallel wipers. I thought they came later in the series.

A few oddities that stand out:

    - Seems to have had the whole or lower nose replaced at one time for a much later one with the round ducts (not at all uncommon but not correct especially after a restoration)

    - Serial number seems too early to have the black lower paint line as high as it is. Again this would be proper for a much later car.

Just generally looking it appears to be a clean and solid car but with a poorly researched restoration. In other words the parts are clean and nice but not necessarily the correct ones for the car. If you don't care then the condition appears to be there and you could have a nice driver. If you are after a concours correct example then most of what I see needs to be re-done.

04574 is a January 1973 build so the revised front clip with the circular inlets for the cabin fans, raised lower body blacking lines and parallel wipers are most likely all correct though Matthias will be able to confirm.

According to the data plate, 04574 shows being manufactured in Sept 1972. For comparison, here’s the ex Gary Kohs 7000 mile original paint 04234 shows manufactured in June 1972. Both U.S. Spec. It would be of Interest to hear when the round inlets replaced the rectangular ones. Also when parallel wipers replaced the clappers. You can make out on 04234 how high the lower black line is.

I took the build date from the Dino Compendium records Freeman so there is a discrepancy in it against the plate on the car. The changes to the wipers, front clip and lower blacking line came sometime in the latter part of 1972. Matthias lists the wiper change on US models starting from body number 1251.

the DC has a typo error it seems as there are 12 cars with Jan 73 sandwiched between build dates of july 72. Odd?

    4754 is sept 72!!

old ID plate has definitely been removed as you can see a scratch line where the drill slipped getting the old rivet out!!

getting a windscreen chrome surround will be a challenge

Good spot Tony. That will indeed be a challenge. I don't recall ever seeing a surround for sale. It may be something that the likes of Brandoli can offer to remake.

If you look at one of the side view photos, the windshield trim looks to be there. I’m guessing it’s the lighting.

You are right Freeman. The trim can be seen in the side view shot of the left of the car.

these are around, I have one sitting in my garage. I had a second but used it for a car. Biggest issue is shipping. Not an easy thing to safely pack and ship in any sort of economical way.

Gary Kohs, the long time owner of 0423 was a personal friend of Enzo Ferrari. I think he bought it when it was nearly new. I knew him and had corresponded with him about selling the car way before it was offered publicly. I ended up wanting a Euro Spec and a bit more “used” so I didn’t have to worry so much. Dino 04234 only had a bit less than 6000 miles on it and it was too perfect (and red)!
