Yes, exactly, these 333 SP's are not really that old yet and all information is quickly available.
The book is really more of a pictorial history with less focus on chassis numbers.
    Appendix 2 is a list of race entries and results by chassis and listed are 001, 002, 003, 004, 004B, 004/005, 005, 009, 010, 011, 012, 012 B, 016, 017, 018, 019, 020, 021, 022, 023, 024 025, 026, 029, 030, 031, 037 and 040.
Nothing on all the other numbers in between.

Amazing. Who would have thought that when it has "A Pictorial History" written on the cover in big letters? I think that makes it pretty clear that it isn't a book about chassis numbers (not everything has to be about chassis numbers, thank God!). Therefore, whether it is any good or not, in the terms in which it is pitched, depends upon whether the pictures are any good and the captions informative.

I don't know, but....for me...."Pictorial History" or not, and with that important word: "history" ....and based on what the book is supposed to cover, that is new, Dalton Watson's description, and the $150 price.... I too would have expected it to be more comprehensive and include all chassis numbers. No valid reason not to.

It seems like it might just be a larger format and lightly updated version of the WSC Giants 333SP book that O'Neil produced a few years back. That book had a few glaring errors, but for $26, it was not a huge deal. I am disappointed to learn that the $150 version is still lacking a significant number of the cars and their history.

This time I will NOT be sucked in on a pre-order, as I am STILL waiting for the 312P book. It has been sitting in Germany for nearly a month! Truly a horrid reflection on DHL and in part on the publisher for utilizing such a horrible, unreliable, awful carrier. Tracking is USELESS, calling is unhelpful. It is possible that I will be able to order it on Amazon and receive it, at a lower price, before it get delivered from a direct pre-order!

Try Book Depository. Free shipping, and I have never purchased a book from them that was delivered by DHL.

Where do you live? USA? Europe? Elsewhere? I don't think you can blame the publisher for chosing DHL. I am sure you could have asked them for another courrier service (at a cost). Sitting in Germany for nearly a month? Please also keep in mind that in between there was the xmas/new year "almost three week closure of Europe". Everything was more or less closed between 18th December 2019 and 6th January 2020. You couldn't do much in those almost three weeks. Europe stood still, everything was closed. Everything! I personally find this crazy in the modern world with all the electronics, digital world, computers, etc. But I also mentioned earlier that one should really use FEDEX, no matter what it costs. They are the best (no, I have no horse in this race). Superfast and reliable. I use them since decades without the slightest problem, always really perfect. No matter where the stuff comes from (I live in Switzerland). Yes, it costs a lot but it's worth the price.

    USA.
It is an pathetic for a continent to shut down for 3 weeks unless at war or a major natural disaster has occurred.
FedEx might have been better in hindsight, but was not an option for the online order over 3 months ago. Too late now.
Still no movement of the package since 28th of December. Tracking through DHL says that the "shipment will be transported". Great! when?
No one can say where it is, no one can say when it might move, no one can even tell there it is. In my world if you can follow through in a timely fashion, your customer will go elsewhere.

At this point you might contact the vendor and ask them to take up the matter with DHL. At the very least they should refund the shipping costs, ideally give you a full refund.

Suggest to CALL McKlein in Germany (I believe you ordered from them?). In my opinion they are very good and totally reliable and honest.
On the other hand, IF IF IF the package left on the 28th December and was sent by DHL but by economy (not first class top priority), then it doesn't really surprise me that it hasn't arrived yet in USA. That is only 2 weeks since 28th December 2019 (that was a Saturday anyway). Just generally, USA is not like Europe. In USA many companies/services are open 7 days a week. In Europe that's not the case, it usually is just five days, MON-FRI. And administrative offices such as customs (bureaucrats) etc were closed anyway over the two xmas and new year weeks and re-opened not before the 6th January 2020.

I have been in contact with BOTH McKlein and DHL on multiple occasions throughout this saga. It is not a matter of whether they are reliable and honest, they simply haven’t delivered the product in a timely fashion. The book was ordered and paid for in October. It was shipped on December 17th at a shipping cost of over $30 for a 3 pound package. That is not book rate/economy. Allegedly, DHL had “capacity issues” and decided to not send the parcel by air, but rather put it on a boat like Europe is still in the 1800’s. It is projected to arrive in the US sometime near the end of January. A month and a half to get purchase from Germany is pathetic....They are making the Italian government look fast and efficient! McKlein and DHL have failed miserably. Don’t charge for air and send by ship. That is a bait and switch scheme.

Really...? The customs excuse... I can ship an entire car from the US, get it through customs, run an event and get it home and back through customs again faster than this farce. It is likely that I will source the book elsewhere and reject the delivery from McKlein. I am sure it will eventually be returned to them by sometime this summer.....

That sounds like a good plan. My last two adventures with DHL, both shipped from England, were laden with anxiety. One shipment was $1,000 worth of books and the other was $4,000 worth of leather. In both cases I asked the vendor specifically NOT to use DHL. They did it anyway.

I eventually got both shipments but it was only after a lot of worry and frustration.
DHL might be good in Europe, but I don’t care what anybody says...DHL service to the U.S. sucks.

Really sorry but shipping cost of a bit over US$ 30 is nothing. That is not even economy!! You should have asked specifically for AIR delivery, first class top priority, next day delivery. And of course, pay much much more for that, something like US$ 250 or even more (I know what I pay for my Fedex stuff! Sometimes it is up to US$ 700 = sevenhundred $). If you are not willing to pay these much higer fees, then you will get delivery "by ship". I can assure you that the book "312 P" did not become available before the 13th December 2019 which was a Friday (final production wasn't completed before). Generally, there is no specific "book rate" for shippings anymore. Such a thing/service has ceased to exist long time ago. I understand that you are upset but I categorically disagree with your statement that McKlein has failed miserably. It clearly is a matter of HOW YOU want something shipped (you have to pay for that!).
Let me just tell you that just this week I ordered paper merchandise from Pennsylvania/USA to my address in Switzerland. The merchandise total cost is just lousy US$ 103 (one hundred and three). I have it airfreighted by Fedex first class top priority and the Fedex shipping costs is US$ 750 (seven hundred and fifty). It is just paper stuff (clear plastic book covers/jackets from library specialist company Brodart in PA). I had to fill in no fewer than seven (7) pages of paperwork for US customs and US Government nonsense, because USA controls everything in and out. On top of that I even had to send in copy of my Swiss passport (in color!) and also my credit card (both sides, back and forth, all in color). Seven full pages of paper. For US bureaucrats………... Anybody said anything about the digital age?
And you are complaining and stating "Europe is still in the 1800s"?? Come on.

As for DHL in general you need to know that they are part of the normal/regular German post (Deutsche Post). Not more than that. Never use DHL. Never. And be prepared to pay more, much much more, if you don't want to wait (which I fully understand).

    My 0.2 cents.

No other shipping options were available on the McKlein page for books purchase. No choice to pay more for faster shipping. No choice to use a shipper other than DHL. McKlein has told me that they expected it to go by air and take 10 to 15 days. It didn’t.

If the shipping costs exceed the value of the item, very few people would buy it. Paying $750 for $100 item seems absurd, unless they shipment was so critical it absolutely had to be there next day. As for 7 pages of paperwork and a passport, that is also silly.

Defend McKlein all you want, but they have underdelivered......in fact, they haven’t delivered at all and I am not the only one they and DHL have failed.

I am in the same boat with DHL and McKlein as per my previous posts. My contact at McKlein provided "options" that all involved additional waiting. I've ordered books from England, Italy, France and Japan with no delays or issues. The only constant here is DHL and the publisher's decision to use them and no alternative for another shipping vendor. McKlein has been responsive to my email inquiries but hasn't come through with pressure on DHL. They are waiting for a delivery grace period to expire before exploring the problem in a real way.

The book and shipping cost about $127 USD. Not a fortune and I have paid much more. I received a wonderful copy of "Ferrari In Camera" from England in about 10 days from the British postal service and our own USPS.

It's not the money, it's the principle...

It is not about defending McKlein or not.
Right from the beginning you could have CALLED McKlein, rather than ordering online thru some website. Certain websites are sometimes not totally up-to-date or incomplete (because it costs money to maintain all the time) and with a simple phone call/order (Americans always like to call, they do everything by phone!!) you could easily have discussed the shipping question right from the start. I also suggest (should I say recommend) to never pre-order any item, simply because something is announced with a certain delivery/availability date it doesn't mean that the product will ever really appear. I have had orders online "waiting" for 2 years and the product never arrived. Many many book publishers announce new books very early on, try to get quickly as much $$$ as possible, and then figure out how many copies they actually have to print. Finding out how much interest there really is in their new book.
I always wait with an order till the book is actually physically available. Not months in advance.

Yes, I agree paying 700 bucks shipping for a 100 $ item is absurd. BUT, it does work and I don't care. After all, it's only money. And I want the product. Now and not in 2050.

I did not buy the 312P book, but I did buy the 156 Sharknose book, also published by McKlein. I did not purchase from McKlein. I purchased it from Book Depository. I paid $50 less than McKlein’s full retail price. Shipping was free. I had the book within 10 days. It was shipped by Royal Mail, seamlessly (apparently) handed off to USPS.

    Sure seems it....
"Some website"....? It was McKlein's own online storefront.....as I noted in post 2840. https://www.rallyandracing.com/McKlein-Store/?lang=1&af=100002
......and this American does NOT like to call (not nice of you to make a blanket and incorrect assumption about 330M people)! I could churn my own butter too, but prefer not to....;)

I have taken your advice and ordered both the 312P and 156 book through the Book Depository this morning. Less than ordering directly through McKlein. Will be interesting to see which arrives first! Thank you for your helpful input.

I don't wish to get too off topic here, and perhaps you already tried other avenues, but there are a number of suppliers of Brodart products in the UK (some of which can be purchased via Amazon UK). I would have thought one of them might have been able to supply what you wanted without such extreme shipping costs.

I have purchased from Brodart in USA for more than 12 years already (I own more than 3'000 books) and am quite happy with them.
It usually works. But yes, the administrative efforts with stuff from USA is totally insane.

    Mr "Ney"

I tried to say that if somebody wants to have special handling or special delivery (faster/different than regular economy) you could have called McKlein instead or it would have been better to call McKlein to find out if they offer a different shipping method (a faster one). You chose the website which most probably offers just standard (economy) shipping.

FYI, I ordered 3 books from Book Depository on Jan 2nd, to include the Sharknose and 312P books. Everything appeared good, I first received a message that the books were being dispatched from their wearhouse, then 2 additional ones informing me that a specific title was on its way (apparently being mailed separately). Then, on Jan 9th, I received a message that the 312P book order was being refunded because "they were unable to fulfill it". Not to wish you bad luck, but it would be interesting to know if they can fulfill your order. I subsequently place an order for the 312P book directly with McKlein for just about the same overall cost.

My Book Depository items arrived yesterday and today the Sharknose book came. Haven't had a chance to open it, but it looks very impressive.
