Enjoy the car, enjoy the lifestyle, go to the track, do the dinners, and extract as much joy out of life and your passion for cars before you leave earth.

To me, cars is a passion and a way of life. I work hard to buy and enjoy them and I don’t do it to turn a profit.

However, if every once in a while you do turn a profit, it just makes the next deal that much sweeter.

worth noting, in the US the premium over MSRP held for the Speciale for 4-5 years? 2018/19 Pistas are being marketed for near MSRP or slightly over.

This is not about the Pista being less desirable vs the Speciale. It's about a clear shift in the market dynamics that is now in place. Folks coming into the market should assume the old rules no longer apply to the same extent. Ferrari dealers need to adjust business tactics accordingly.....

Perfect stares. To pile on just a bit. It is exhausting reading these complaints about no profit. If it isn’t for pure driving pleasure and appreciation of the brand there are just better ways to spend your money.

The enjoyment from driving my Pista trumps any depreciation hits I might have to take over the next few years.

Looking at other exotics in the market place, I would say the Pista holds its value relatively well anyways.

Jesus- this place is turning into Rennlist. Next thing we are going to start talking bout is ADMs and brokers getting cars.

If prices do come down and good specs become available I bet many will move to a Pista vs. an F8.

  12. I will tell you why Pistas are not selling.

At least why my Pista is not selling.

Because it is a fantastic car.

I am amazed at the msrp of a well equipped F8. That's flagship NA V12 pricing a few years ago. Ferrari going after next crop of young wealth.

For a limited edition car I counted at least 30 for sale. When I looked for a Scuderia don’t remember seeing that many one year after production. If I don’t get an order by June for the Tributo,I might pull my deposit on the F8 and go for it.

I was in the factory in late November and there were tons of Pistas on the V-8 production line. Shocking for a limited production car, where people had to lose money on a Lusso for an allocation.

I would guess the markets are down at least a Pista or two for most Ferrari owners. Unless Pistas have dropped 30% in value, I should have bought one and put it up for sale right now too. Would have been a better use of money.

I agree and share your assessment.

What I find even more amazing is that this is a classic example of the law of diminished returns. The new mainstream car (F8) has the same power than the previous special edition car (488 Pista), and a price point that most would find difficult to justify the upgrade.

This is a first for Ferrari, as:

Old SE: 360 Challenge Stradale (425hp)
    New mainstream: F430 (490hp)

    Old SE: 430 Scuderia (510hp)
    New mainstream: 458 Italia (570hp)

    Old SE: 458 Speciale (605hp)
    New mainstream: 488 GTB (670hp)

    Old SE: 488 Pista (720hp)
    New mainstream: F8 Tributo (720hp)

This makes all the more incomprehensible why Pistas aren’t selling as much as some would expect, as all things being equal as shown above, I’d go for a Pista and I can’t find much strength in the contrary position, at least if one only considers two variables: money and horsepower. Difficult to justify the upgrade based on that, imvho.

    Kind regards.

    Nuno.

The number 1 rule in car collecting is I have it and you can't get it. Limited production models mean just that. My opinion is 500 or less. Look at a 16m. Look at a 599 gto. I am sorry if 30 are for sale that is not limited production imho. Granted with Ferrari there are cars where you can prove me wrong but overall that is the idea.

    1) You should definitely take a Pista over an F8 - dont think twice about it.
    2) Speculators who probably thought they could make some money or may not have the means to deal with the current economy.

What you are seeing is not Pista specific, all so called limited cars have dropped quite a bit. We've seen this before, then a number of years later you kick yourself for not pulling the trigger. Right now there are good deals on most cars mentioned above but people want to see how low they will go. I am sure there will be some that need to liquidate and others than can hold forever. Just be ready when a deal comes your way.
