There is a photo of the finish of a 50’s Mille Miglia where the driver is wearing a suit and tie and is being congratulated by his actress wife. I think he came out of retirement to drive in the race and his wife was very happy to see him at the finish as it was becoming a deadly activity. Any links to that photo? I can’t seem to find it.
    Thanks.

    You have three stories combined:

Marzotto won very well dressed, De Portango kissed his star wife gf??), at a stop before crashing to death, and Villoresi retired after winning as he promised his wife!!
    apologies for spelling..

As Tex states, Alfonso de Portago stopped during the 1957 Mille Miglia to kiss his girlfriend Linda Christian shortly before he lost his life.
His fatal crash brought to an end the running of that event (1927-1957, 1980's onward 'revivals' notwithstanding).

Roberto Rossellini with Ingrid Bergman at the 1953 Mille Miglia in 250 MM Spider Vignale #0230MM, car number 544. The car failed to finish (differential), so probably not the pics you are looking for.

Similar to those. Lots of people around but the driver was wearing a suit and tie, and was pretty dirty from the dust and oil. His wife was on the right side of the car as it was a RHD car. And from memory he was older, maybe 45, and had come out of retirement for that race. Maybe it’s not the Mille Miglia but another 50’s road race. Maybe the Targa Florio? Actually thinking about it I can’t remember a passenger/navigator in the car, so maybe not the MM.

The only driver I know of wearing a suit and winning the MM (two times) was Count Giannino „Gianni“ Marzotto.

Yes it must be him. How many guys raced in a suit and tie? And the suit was not a Nomex suit, but a Saville Row suit.

Absolutely not. It was from Manifattura Lane Tessile Gaetano Marzotto & Figli S.p.A..
FYI the Marzottos were (and still are) in the textile business since almost 200 years.

Not in Brescia: just leaving the Roma race control.
