My 2002 Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen finished in black over black leather is now available. $43,463.

Having purchased the car 16 months ago as the third owner, I have daily driven it and covered 23K miles since acquiring. It now shows 76k miles. The first owner, a prominent Washington DC entrepreneur, purchased this car new from Euro Motorcars in Bethesda, Maryland. Having driven it sparingly under his ownership and serviced exclusively at the same dealer, it was subsequently purchased several years later by the General Manager of Euro Motorcars, who maintained the pedigree until I purchased in in August 2018.

Offered with a number of service records, the most recent service in April 2019 included a Pennsylvania state inspection as well as rear rotors and pads at a cost of $707. The car will be sold with a fresh B Service. Also included, as expected, are factory manuals and two key fobs.

The paint is shown from multiple angles and distances and presents extremely well. This is the result of OCD ownership and over-use of a personal favorite silica coat, CarPro Reload. The paint is resilient and cleans up to nearly new standard, however the Gelandewagen is just as at home covered in mud (which I have not done under my ownership, unfortunately). The clear plastic rear fender protectors are brand new, as are the fender flares themselves. The car also has a new fuel tank, rear bumper, and spare tire cap & cover. I was tapped lightly at a stop sign in October of 2018, and while the rear bumper was cracked, the items listed above were replaced during removal and replacement, and not due to the impact, which was a 5 mph bump. In all candor, I am unsure why State Farm covered the tire cap, but they did. At that time I also requested that PDR be completed around the car, which is now dent free, save one small depression between the driver and passenger doors on the driver’s side.

The front bumper and painted metal brush bar elements show use and could be reconditioned to become a show-condition example. The lower mouldings show signs of warping. The windshield show signs of use, but this is to expected with a flat windshield at 10K miles, let alone 75K. While three of the four genuine Mercedes G550 wheels are perfect, the one pictured shows curb rash.

There are no warnings of any kind, no deferred maintenance, and no abnormal driving characteristics. The car tracks straight, accelerates and shifts smoothly, exhibits no interior thuds or creaks, and will actually turn if you drive under 5 miles per hour! Driving a G Wagen is akin to a somewhat agricultural experience – those who align with the ethos will find that there is nothing that can replace a G Wagen with regard to it’s purposeful, iconic character. The satisfying door opening and closing, rifle-action door locks, and illustrious vault-like feelings inside the car are incomparable to segment competition, including full sized Rovers. Everything tactile input is deliberate and built to the extreme. It is unapologetically different, and once you own a G, nothing else will suffice. I’ll be making my way back into G ownership in Q4 2020.

This G500 features genuine 18″ G550 wheels mounted with 265/60 Yokohama Geolandar H/T tires. These tires are quiet, comfortable, and last forever – they come highly recommended from the G Wagen community. There is plenty of tread remaining, as they receive little stress in the form of acceleration of turning, neither of which are hallmark traits of the G. Underneath, the car shows surface rust, however after inspection by offroad and G Class specialists Main Line Overland (West Chester, PA) in August, while in for rear brakes, guidance was that the surface rust presented no issues and no remediation was required or suggested.

Inside, black leather is accented with burl wood. Heated front and rear seats work tremendously. There is a hole in the headliner from a prior installation of a Bluetooth microphone that has since been replaced with a pioneer unit that features Apple Car Play, Bluetooth audio and telephone, and a rearview camera. Functionality is flawless, however the unit shows a warning related to not being connected to the parking brake at startup. The LDC display, notorious for fading and dead pixels, was replaced this summer.

In summary, in a world where these cars are up to 17 years old in the United States, it is rare to come across a G500 as nice as this. With the correct color combination, the lowest mileage of any G500 offered today, three known and meticulous custodians, service records, and condition with regard to aesthetics and rust that plagues these cars, this is a unicorn. A similar car, in a less desirable color combination, more miles, and an unknown accident, sold on 9/30 on Bring a trailer for $40,500 plus a 5% buyer’s premium for a final purchase price of $42,525. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-mercedes-benz-g500-17/

Please do not hesitate to send a message with additional questions as this is a rare chance to purchase one of the cleanest, well-presented G500’s that has been offered to date. PPI can be happily accommodated at buyer’s expense.
