Interesting to see the differences on the Warranty Cards. 246’s are called Dino and 308’s are called Ferrari. Manufacturer is Ferrari. No different than a Chevrolet is manufactured by GM. In each case, it seems the factory intended “Dino” to be its own brand manufactured by Ferrari.
I've given up on these "it's not a Ferrari" guys. If my Dino was made my Hyundai I would still think it was an awesome car. Fortunately it's not made by Hyundai, it's made by Ferrari.

In this fantastic video posted in the Vintage Ferrari section, we can see some small V6 cars with their big V12 sisters turning around Fiorano. And we can see the Dino assembly line just next to the 365 GTB/4 and 365 GTC/4 line in the same Ferrari factory. Interesting to see that some cars have a door mirror. So yes, the 246GT/GTS is a Ferrari. But the name Dino makes an original difference. And you can all see the small Cavallino on the VIN tag of your Dino.
It all boils down to if any factory documents show Model/Modello as “Ferrari”. So far I’ve only seen “Dino”!
Once the 17 digit VIN’s were established, two are interesting as manufacturers: First Three Letters are the World Manufacturer Identifier. First Letter is the region of the world. Z identifies Italy. Next two letters identify the Manufacturer. ZFF - Italy/Ferrari/Ferrari ZDF - Italy/Dino/Ferrari Shawn
Shawn, that’s interesting, especially since the 17 digit VIN wasn’t adopted until ‘79/‘80. Ferrari looks to have been planning a new Dino brand range?
I would guess at the time frame a manufacturer was following the guidelines for the VIN adopted nomenclature, the 308 GT 4 was still Dino. Although the VIN wasn’t adopted until 79/80, I would guess the lead time for the acceptable creation/application would have been months, if not years before. I am only guessing, maybe others with more knowledge base can chime in. I can not recall why this was in my head but a simple search found the VIN Decoder page on www.red-headed.com. I remember reading this in a book, but I’m just not sure which one. So at least I want to give credit for what helped me reference this fast. Shawn
I didn’t mean to restart a serious discussion. I just thought this photo was amusing. But the comments and material that followed i are very interesting! A Image Unavailable, Please Login happy new year to alll. Andy
03930 is U.S. Spec (living in Texas), 03932 (mine, living in California) is Italian Spec and 03934 (living in France) is French Spec! Now that’s production efficiency!
03930 was completed 26 May 1972. Via Chinetti Garthwaite to Arnold S.Liebelman. 03932 was completed 26 April 1972. Via Motor S.a.s. to Gianfranco Pattera. 03934 was completed 26 April 1972. Via Pozzi to Pierre Violet. Marcel Massini
Thank you Marcel! Mine obviously is one of the rare Ferrari versions since it says so on the trunk and in the Italian documents! Thank you Marcel! (Marcel did this research for me some years ago) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here's the warranty card of #03934. I don't have much documents. Just a few Pozzi maintenance bills with names and addresses of previous owners. Image Unavailable, Please Login
That plate should end the argument that a Dino is not a Ferrari. It won't for some people but it should.

I “think” Ferrari “intended” to make Dino a separate sub-brand under Ferrari but confused matters by overlapping some chassis plates with the Cavallino or “Ferrari” on them.
The mis-communication of Dino started with the dealers to its customers by printing or saying “Ferrari Dino”. I don’t know if there are any official documents from Ferrari on how the Dino should have been communicated or warning it’s dealers about using the word Ferrari with Dino. This continues to the present with official Ferrari dealers. This has only led to more confusion. Building on the confusion was the 308 being first a Dino then the factory making it a Ferrari. That car is amazing, but the mileage? It looks correct, but restored. It looks like a euro but delivered to the US? Were there door panels without screws? Rivets on the door sill plate don't look right. Dash pod thumb screws? Pod looks like it's been recovered (padded.) Regardless, even if it's restored, it's very correct and beautiful.
