No idea that the Merlin engines were kicking out close to 2000hp and routinely in excess of 1000hp. I assumed that they were only putting out about 200 hp on 90 octane fuel. It is amazing how much influence just upping the quality of fuel had on the eventual outcome of the air battles. I also had no idea on the number of engines that were produced.

They mentioned that thrust was increased following the introduction of fuel injection in the Merlin. I was always under the impression that the term thrust was only used when applied to jet powered aircraft. Is that incorrect??

Yes. Thrust, drag, lift, and gravity act on aircraft, with thrust being an appropriate term regardless of the type of motor involved.

Thanks for explanation for appropriate terms, Hannibal 308.

It’s thrust from the propeller. Obviously,
jet engine pushes the aircraft moving hot air behind it.

Excellent video. Necessity again proves it is the mother of invention.

Been a fan of the P-51 since I first saw one. Iconic design and Merlin/Packard power.
