More jewelry add to the engine compartment.....

I got a pumping issue i need to solve. I don't have a thermostat that is on the motor, so that means it has to go into the
upper rad hose system. My thermostat housing i have does not allow enough room for the housing, the water pipe etc
to all fit?? Historial photos are all over the place as far as to what is correct. the housing i have has the 2 level - meaning output from the rad is 2 inches lower than the input, which is fine, but now the pipe going from the housing to the motor is too tight to fit appropriately. May have to make a pipe....need some advise

I've seen one period photo in Road and Track of an inside plug PF coupe without a thermostat in the upper hose. I've seen one high end restored series 1 without a thermostat too. The stepped thermostats I have seen tend to be on cars earlier than yours in my observations. I have typically seen the straight thru thermostats on cars just after yours. So I think all three are viable options. On my car and it sounds like yours too, the stepped thermostat would not fit. I ended up using a straight thru thermostat but I have never liked the fact that the flanges on the thermostat are bigger than the radiator and the pipe. I have the same radiator as you and have wondered if the correct way is no thermostat in the upper hose and only have the thermostatically controlled blinds in the front that you have. I know at first it didn't seem like mine was going to work either, but after a few tries I got it to work with the straight through thermostat. I suspect yours will too.

    Cheers Jim

jim, sounds like i need a visit up your way......

also - i tried to get my louver system to work by inserting the louver thermostate tube in water to see if it moves the bell crank on the radiator. Unfortunately i could not get the tube thermostat to move. Are these replaceable/available?

does not look that way - seemed to be soldered on the bottom - i guess if it done work, i can try to unsolder the bottom section

seems to be stuck open, when installed, the louvers are wide open

Ed, I'd think that there is a coil spring inside the cylinder and it's binding. I would be tempted to take it apart.

It's probably not a dependable system or Ferrari would not have switched to the complicated and costly manual curtain.

ok, i have another spare one so ill attempt to unsolder this and see what i see.....

so what do the big boys do when they have this issue? Guys like Motion and GTO?

one interesting thing with mine is that the plunger is stuck open so the air flows thru - i could leave it that way
and watch it, if it ever changes......at least i would not be in an overheat situation

Just stopping in checking on your build. That is a beautiful car, love the colors, inside and out. Lots of work, but a great sense of accomplishment in doing it all. Congratulations on the progress and on finishing to enjoy it.

Ed, call Mel and Sons in Concord, CA. It looks like an ordinary radiator shop, except it's not. I've seen some exotic radiators there in my visits. They may give you a lead or maybe tell you the fix.

The plate is just sitting on the bumper for looks - it is large but the back tail panel can handle it

This plate is interesting - i have the front as well - the only providence in italy that spells out the city name

I had to buy the whole car when i was living in Milan, registration and all to get this plate - very rare do you see a ROMA plate for sale. It was at one of the Mosta Scambio's in Milan at the time.

I thought the 7007 was cool - BOND, JAMES BOND!!

I don't know if you have ever seen the personalized Virginia license plate that Gordon Stewart has had on his Boano for ages (I think he still owns it) that always made me chuckle - "TDF PARTS"

You are so close! It looks fantastic!
