I removed as many plated components as I could from the car, degreased, stripped and had the items replated in zinc with yellow chromate as per OEM. Really happy with the result and the fasteners went through a de-embrittlement process to ensure no loss of structural integrity.

At my last engine out I changed the brake lines to braided type, but now wanted to revert back to OEM so I found a new set of front and rear OEM lines to re fit. Also the two one way check valves for the vacuum lines are going to be replaced with new OEM ones. As the original are faded due to heatsoak.

Forgive me for asking. I’m being totally serious. And I concede, I have not read this entire thread. But, was all this necessary? Why is your engine completely dismantled? Was there something seriously wrong with it? I got the impression your car is superb, yet this seems a bit extreme and excessive. These details are all very cool but I honestly don’t that’s know. Thank you.

It is extreme and excessive. I don’t do things any other way.

The car however is almost 25 years old and it wasn’t some low mileage garage Queen when I purchased it - the car now has 37000 miles. During its scheduled engine out service I performed a leak down and compression test, it was low on compression on two cylinders (as previously documented) so the engine is apart for new valve guides.

In Australia there are very few F355 available. This being even more rare being one of the less than 10 non airbag 355 delivered new.

There simply aren’t any for sale with less than 30,000 kms. I fact there has only been one car at about 7000 kms for sale in the last 8 years- a Giallo GTS. The few low mileage cars left are tucked away in collections and not for sale.

I want to own the best F355 I can. So I’m restoring the car to an as new condition. This thread is documenting that. If you don’t get it that’s cool. But you should probably start from the beginning of the thread to fully understand.

Most of this work is all mechanical the car hasn’t been painted nor the interior retrimmed it’s an other very honest car that is being very methodically restored, so I can enjoy it for many years to come.

The answer is car OCD. A few car guys have this trait and we LOVE IT.:D
How else would you get seriously time consuming, yet wonderful, museum exhibit style, threads like this.

    Kickass work.
Did you change the brake hard lines on the rear subframe? I want new ones. Looking for a source.

Trust me, I have the same trait. My two Ferraris are in absolute perfect condition and they are both multi platinum show winners at the finest concours. I also have a 1985 Countach that is currently undergoing a full restoration. So, I understand. I asked the question because the OP’s car already seemed to be in perfect condition. But, he answered my question earlier.

Thanks, I left the hard lines as they were good, I replaced the white plastic tabs that hold the line though. From what I have seen the brake lines don’t come pre bent so you need to have the pipe bender to form the shape.

The a/c pipes have a insulated aluminum cover to shield from the radiant heat of the engine.

They always seem to be torn, tatty and over-sprayed. I purchased a crimping tool and used an off cut insulation piece that is an exact match for OEM now the line looks factory fresh. There are 3 pipes in total and all are a different O.D so I will need to source some more of the insulation to complete the others.

The crimping tool is awesome! It was sourced locally off eBay it was about $300 AUD it’s great quality and I’m sure I will use it again on other F355’s. Now I just need to source more insulation. My friend got the off cut from a refrigeration technician.

Sal at Racing Red put the corrugated insulation on for me, but he didn't have a crimper.

I am curious about what process/products you used to get the piston crowns so clean?

Hi I used WD40 specialist throttle body and carby cleaner with a non abrasive scotch brite pad and a nylon bristle brush. It took some time to remove and break up all the carbon I juts took my time and did it one at a time.
