I was under the impression that nikasil coated cylinder liners should not be honed. Can someone please explain. Won't you damage the coating and cause the engine to burn oil?

I could be wrong but they look like steel liners which can be bored and honed if enough wall thickness is left. The nikasil is a coating on aluminium and can’t be honed, but in some cases where the skirt of the piston has smeared aluminium on the coating it can be cleaned with a scotch bright pad if the coating isn’t worn.
Its not a traditional hone like you would on Iron or steel, really your just deglazing the cylinder with a material made specially for Nikasil. But yes if you broke through the coating it would be ruined.
