I'll defer to someone who knows more about this subject than I do, meanwhile, my understanding is the following:

Ferrari SpA retained affiliate racing specialists Michelotto for the purpose of building a series of Competizione F40s dubbed the F40LM.

Michelotto initially accepted 19 chassis from Ferrari SpA and purpose-built F40LMs from scratch.

The 19 chassis were not assembled road-cars pulled off the 'line at any stage, they were simply a chassis, engine & certain components supplied to them by their clients Ferrari SpA.

The reason for this approach was economic, it would be significantly more expensive starting with an assembled car which would then have to incur the cost of disassembly and the loss of discarded road-car parts.

IMO, the Competizione F40s that were purpose-built F40LMs from scratch are quite special as they were never anything else but full-blooded racing F40s from birth.

Happy to be corrected if anyone has definitive proof otherwise.

I'm really not sure, TBH I never knew he drove one home & around, and when I spoke to him extensively during the course of publishing my 288 GTO book, it never came up.

Wow, this thread is now over 9 years old!

I am sure that there is more information available now than in June 2010 so does anyone have any further details on the history of these prototypes, some of which seem to have disappeared? The above list of S/Ns appears all over the internet but I think 74327 is in fact ZFFAA17B000074327, an EU spec Testarossa. If that is correct and there were 8 prototypes, is there another S/N that is not included in this list?

The man is not very keen on driving it, he drove one of the two f40 prototypes before the original presentation date (I think it was around this time of the year???). It would be the special 1 that prototype. Plus it's part of the very first 2 f40 ever.

Happy to correct my records, what's your proof that 74327 in this list refers to a Testarossa and not to an F40?

    Is this photo-documented somewhere?

Not that I know, it came from Eng. Materazzi mouth during his birthday (?) on that gathering / track day organized by Cironi with all the big motorsport historics and fans a couple of years ago. I will try to find the video and the time stamp.

74327 is not an F40 (according to factory records).

I didn't know that. Must have missed it then.
It is kinda rare for these cars to show at a dealer in the first place.

Where is the “car” that was used to mould the F40 body on. It was on a Ferrari chassis. This car may have become the first F40 pre production prototype.

One of a series of pix I took in May 1987, not at the factory, two months before the official presentation (which was 21 July 1987), no carbon fiber body.

Marcel you mentioned in the past that the F40 shown to journalists to photograph at the Fiorano introduction had no serial number displayed. Do you think that was 74045 displayed there?

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Marcel maybe you are in this second picture at Fiorano with 73015 plus a second F40 which I call the 'picture car'.
