This is an original Ferrari 365 V-12 engine that would have been used to power one of the Ferrari Daytonas (GTB/4 or GTS/4) built from 1968 through 1973.

This engine assembly, number 12799/B140 appears to be an extremely complete and correct example that has been properly stored and preserved in original condition. It appears to be all original and shows no signs of damage, abuse or neglect.

Based on the stamped number of 12799 on the bell housing, it is likely to be from a mid-production Daytona.

With the exception of the exhaust manifolds, this engine appears to be complete. It has the original downdraft carburetors, original air cleaner, alternator, starter, distributors, oil pumps, oil lines, oil filters, wiring, bell housing, clutch, flywheel, fuel connections, etc.

The aluminum components such as the cylinder block, heads, bell housing, clutch housing, oil pan, flywheel housing and cam drive housing show no signs of wear, damage, or oxidation. All of the surface finishes appear to be factory original and free of modifications or alterations.

The four original camshaft covers and air cleaner are still finished in their original “wrinkled” finish, black paint. All of the hardware items appear to be original.

There is no evidence that this engine has ever been taken apart or altered in any way.

From an appearance standpoint, this engine assembly is very clean and very presentable. It has always been properly stored and displayed.

For display purposes, this engine has been fitted to a custom built, aluminum display stand. This polished stand was professionally made and has the Ferrari emblem attached to the base.

This is a highly sought after and rare engine that that will certainly offer its next owner a variety of desirable opportunities.

The price is 110,000.00 for this engine and it is located near Detroit, MI.

This might be the car it came from:

    https://www.artcurial.com/en/lot-1970-ferrari-365-gtb4-daytona-spider-conversion-par-bacchelli-villa-en-1974-titre-de

Perhaps the auction house or the restoration shop that recently worked on it can put you in touch with the current owner.

" ....In 2016, the Spider is shipped to Bologne in Italy, to the attention of great specialists at the Sauro company, for a mechanical bottom-engine rebuild, including replacement of a great number of parts for an amount approaching € 50,000 (invoices available in the file)...."

Isn't it unusual for such an impressive motor to be separated from its original body?

Only wondering, as it is a completely 'shot in the dark' as cannot do a proper 'due diligence'
on it, specially if never been apart. Pandoras box :)
    GLWS!

    Regards, Alberto

This engine has been in its current "display state" for the past 30+/- years. It is believed that it was removed from a damaged car that, at the time, may have been in the Detroit area.

I did contact both the auction company and the restoration shop mentioned and informed them about the availability of this engine. I doubt they will forward this to the current or past owners, but who knows. Based on the auction description, this particular Daytona seems to have a bit of a checkered past, so it is possible to be the same damaged vehicle that this engine was removed from long ago.

Thank you, sixcarbs for providing this information. It is fascinating how these vehicles travel and change throughout the years.

A close read of the auction description for the car sold at Artcurial clearly reads as follows:

"it is returned to Italy in 1974 by its owner, friend of Scaglietti, to be transformed into a spider version by Bachelli and Villa. The conversion work will be done in collaboration with Scaglietti workers. Once finished, the car comes back with the chassis number "12799 GTS", modification stated on the original Italian papers. It was sold in December 1979 to Mr. Cudone of Padua in Italy and registered VI 475321. It is then registered in the name of Speedy Snc, Mr. Cudone's company, where it will remain until 2005, year when it is acquired by one of Mr. Cudone's friends. The engine is not matching but proper engine from a first serie fitted with a Daytona Group IV air-box, more powerful. "

The auction description clearly states that this particular car was renumbered to "12799 GTS" and that "The engine is not matching...."

It would certainly be nice to reunite this engine with the car, since this Daytona does not have the correct engine.

I am a bit confused by the auction company's phrasing "Once finished, the car comes back with the chassis number "12799 GTS", modification stated on the original Italian papers." Does this mean this auction car was renumbered? Why would they do that? Unless it was built or re-assembled from parts from another car with the chassis number 12799, which would make sense since it is believed that the car that is engine came from was wrecked or severely damaged. I would be curious to know. Thanks.

Maybe the modification is from 12799 GTB/4 to 12799 GTS/4. That's my guess. Your best source is Marcel Massini who is a poster on this site. If anyone knows where 12799 is it's him.

You might want to try posting in the Vintage section that you are looking for 12799.

Would really like to see this reunited with the original car. Someone must know the owner.

Shouldn’t the Ferrari text on the cam covers be finished in black and not silver?

Not sure about the finish on the Ferrari text. It is likely it was finished in silver for display purposes, but I am not sure.
This engine is still available and we will consider realistic offers. Thanks.
