I’m one of those that day sound is of little relevance.

Don’t agree, I’ve driven the 720s and it’s faster than any of the cars you mention and I still really like the 458. Fun factory is quite amazing!

    SoCal to az,

I know. I was kidding and it wasn’t aimed at you even the slightest, or to anyone in particular. My apologies if it came across the wrong way.

Everything in life is subjective, but I do believe over time, when electric and/or autonomous cars and proper cars are dead, we’ll go back to basics.

I guess sound doesn’t matter, until it does. The last naturally aspirated engine doesn’t matter until it does.

We all have different ways of thinking, buying and enjoying our Ferraris, and we cherish and value different things. That’s it.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

It’s all good Nuno- was just commenting that no one asked about the 488 when in fact it was brought up. Anyways- my apologies for detailing the thread.

Refer post # 14. Was referred to in the course of trying to claim superiority.

I don't believe any Pista or 488 owner would be looking to stone any 458 owner - doubt they could be bothered. However, your post does serve as further example of an insecurity present. It seems ever since 488, Pista and F8 arrived on the scene a tireless sound debate has emanated from certain 458 owners. So unnecessary really. Not once heard a 488 Pista or prospective F8 owner try to reinforce their position against a 458. I think it all comes down to being genuinely happy with ones own lot. Anyway...

Sound is certainly of relevance to the majority of people who buy these cars. It’s one of the key differentiators of an exotic sports car and part of what has defined the brand for so many years. Ferrari itself admitted that it committed a lot of resources to the 488 and F8 exhaust tuning to because they know most customers do care.

That said, I can understand that some people prioritize other qualities (performance, styling) however sound quality is one of the few characteristics that can be enjoyed on every drive, regardless of speed.

Yawn, if you want a N/A sound by a 458.

If you don’t care or prefer the more emasculated sound of turbos, then buy a 488/whatever.

Better still, get both - No regrets.

True. Save money and buy a 911tt or Audi TTrs if sound doesn’t matter. No need to waste 488 money.

Sound with no power won't do it for me. And power with no sound won't do it for me.

In this way I share an opinion with the late Freddie Mercury: I want it all, and I want it NOW :)

458's sound makes it relevant, even with less power, to the 488. It really does make some pretty sounds, especially with mufflers removed.

This is why I took the long tube headers off my Murci, sound trumped power for the LP. Driving next to your 16M was the final straw of giving up 50+whp to go back to a high pitch. And I'm more of a power/throttle response person than perfect sound.

I drove to cars and coffee in a pack of cars with this guy, he took off from a dead start on HWY 76 and a homeless guy was walking on the river bank, that 458 is so unbelievably loud we watch the homeless guy dive for cover. It really sounds amazing.

My homeless guy sits on the median at a stop light and holds up a SMILE sign as l drive by. He is begging for money. Just about every day. There are HELP WANTED signs on just about every business. Giving money to these people does no one any good. He looks healthy. Has a nice backpack. Sometimes he has his dog. GET A JOB!

I will give food. But never money so they can use it for drugs, booze, etc.

I am the owner - designer of a state of the art high end audio company. Sound is integral to my business and concomitantly my passion. Clearly, the engine note of my super car is a fundamental ingredient to the driving experience. The finest turbo sound is the equivalent of a midfi audio system. The best NA engine is an aural symphony of mellifluous and sonorous music that excites the senses and enhances the enjoyment of life.

Ok - so I am going to sound a bit “old” here, which I really am not

Not sure if this is possible but can the valves be forced to stay closed and if so is there a real performance drop off?

I have no clue, but if you find sound to be too invasive, I guess you can always turn the manettino to wet mode and accelerate slowly.

Although I bet you’ll feel pretty bored after just a couple of miles: it’s nicer to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slowly.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.

If the valves stay closed, the exhaust diameter is .75" smaller in diameter for each bank, then it pancakes down in the center tip. That would severely reduce power in the upper powerband (insert banana in the tailpipe reference here.)

Modified 458s do sound incredible, but I’m always dumbstruck by how amazing and how loud it already sounds when fully stock.

    Kind regards,

    Nuno.
