I’m looking to get into my first Ferrari. I’m pretty set on a 458. What are some things I should be looking closely at.....known problems, nuances, options, etc

    Thank you

You really should post this in the 458 section. You'll get a ton of advice. One thing I can say is that aside from gearbox reliability issues on early ones (many of which have been fixed under warranty), this is a very good and reliable car.

The only problem with 458 is that the car is so good, and so user friendly, you’ll want to drive it every single day

I spent almost two years kicking myself after selling mine, the Bentley I bought was never enough to replace her, and I’m so glad I bought the Cali as at least I’m back in the family, even if I’m now in the lesser V8 in some peoples eyes. To me, I’m in the one meant for a slightly less taut drive!

This may sound whiny, but try and find one with cruise control. I have a heavily optioned car with a 332K list price, and it doesn't have cruise. A twelve hundred dollar option. So WHY do I want cruise? I can be going down the highway with a cop behind me, I KNOW he's there, and I have the hardest time controlling my speed. The difference between 55 and 75 on the throttle is nothing-.the car wants to go faster. Cruise isn't for being lazy- it's a ticket avoidance tool. Probably no one else would tell you this, since it's probably sacrilege to think you'd want one in a Ferrari. But I DRIVE my car.

I've got a lot of options in my car, but I'd be happy without quite a few of them. Front end lift- handy at times but not a deal breaker. the High powered sound system is a JOKE! Back up cameras, front and rear sensors- I've got them but I also have EYES that work. The one thing that I DO like and I never thought it was a big deal is the carbon fiber dash, and tunnel. It's NOT that carbon fiber is that great, but the 458's without it almost look cheap. Plastic parts in a Ferrari dash just doesn't seem right. I feel the carbon fiber IS a fad, it's painful to buy new, but you get them for FREE when you're buying used.

I've had NO issues with the car other than a window regulator that self destructed. An $800.00 part in a Ferrari, a hundred dollar part in any other car. I installed it myself, which gave me the opportunity to see just how much better constructed the new cars are compared to the older ones, that look like they were welded by someone in high school welding class. I have several older Ferrari's that thanks to the 458, I hardly ever want to drive them any more. The 458 is such an incredible car in just about every way. Mines a 2013, that has just ended it's seven year of services by Ferrari. Nothing has been done other than the free services.

Here in the UK you can buy the Cruise module and have it retrofitted for about a thousand bucks

Love this post!!!!! A driver owner!!!, like me, having to watch for cops every time he drives. That’s the sign of a car that gets a proper run out!!!! I have no idea how I still have a licence!

Here’s a tip though, annoy the dipstick in the uniform a bit by changing down the gears into 2nd or 3rd and control the speed that way, the gears are shorter, and he gets to listen to the harmonics of a V8 at 8000 Rev’s!!! Wonderful, and he can’t do a damn thing about it

Forza Ferrari..... the only racing team and car marque that matters. Italia forever It’s easier to apologise than it is to ask permission

Yep! I had cruise control added for exactly that issue! Now I let the car help me when under scrutiny... dealer installed it. Worthwhile.

Thanks for the input boys. I think cruise control is a must, I have a lead foot and even in my cayenne I’m hitting 95 when I’m not paying attention.

I don’t have cruise. Thus l stay off interstates.

Have cruise on our other cars but don’t use it unless on a LONG trip.

At least in a ferrari they call it the ‘pit limiter’, way more cool than ‘cruise’. I like the fact you can set the pit limiter at 150mph if you want!

It’s actually called “Pit Speed” and you can add it, I did to mine. It was the only option not on my car that I wanted. Very worth it!

    Old thread/topic, i know.
But Ferrari calling cruise control for "pit limiter" is plain stupid..
