My dad said that the R-4360 was hard to work on and that the rear rows of cylinders would overheat, because it was hard to get cooling air back to them.

Yes and on the B-36, the 'rear row' of pistons on the R-4360 was the row closest to the prop...

Also, on the B-36, the carb was on the opposite end from the prop and had icing issues as the cold air hit it directly from the intake.
When then engine was installed as a 'tractor' engine on other planes, the air was heated by the cylinders that it passed over before reaching the carb, reducing the icing tendency.

I saw a C124 take off from Boeing Field and I was surprised by the high pitched almost whine produced by the engines at full power. The C-124 had straight stacks and as it was going away from us it almost sounded like a big Offy.

I was just thinking I was surprised that was air cooling. What an incredible nightmare of an engine that must have been to design, build and maintain.

    Radial engines? They're all air-cooled...

The R-4360 has 56 spark plugs; need changing regularly.
    That's 336 spark plugs on a B-36.

The engine in the 'corner' is a 28 cylinder (4 rows of 7 staggered jugs)....
Jugs are staggered so that air can get to all of the cylinders.

    Called a 'corncob' engine.

The sign said $250 to hear it run I’m glad somebody stepped up.

Mike the owner is a cool guy to talk to. Seems like ex- Air Force.

When I was a kid, I could hear 6 of them running several times a week. B-36's...
We lived right under the N end of the N-S runway at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque....
They landed just a few hundred feet over our roof.
Pictures fell off the wall, Cabinet doors flew open, etc.
