hello I'm in the middle of a timing belt service And I found this grease all over my timing belt driveshaft. See photo please advise. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Why did you find the need to remove that sprocket ? Welcome to more work. That bearing has failed and now you have to remove the front face of the engine to replace the bearing.
There is a replacement from Hill Eng for that bearing, do not use the OEM again they are prone to failure. And yes behind there is a likely a roller beating that also need to be upgraded to ball also from Hill. Since your doing that may as well replace the oil tensioner pads with the updated 360 and the timing chain tensioner pad. They need to be done ab out 30K and if those wear down they wont tension correctly. Any yes its a whole new level of work. Check youtoube for videos on it. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mondial T/348 same motor. I have a later serial number Motors which I was reading some where they up dated the inner bearing later to ball and I made the cut... maybe? (cant find the article now) I was hoping to avoid pulling the front cover/sump since this car only has 13,000 miles on it which I know means nothing to those pads! So my plan is to use inner bearing puller tool and pull the front bearing with out removing the cover upgrade to the NTN bearing and call it a day. If I question any thing any else ill do it next belt service. Thoughts.....
That seems like a false economy. You're already in for the 170787 bearing, right? At a minimum, I'd pull the front cover and look at the condition of the tensioners. For the cost of a paper gasket, you'll at least have better information about the tensioner wear. You'll either sleep soundly knowing everything is ship-shape -- or you'll sleep soundly knowing that you fixed/improved everything. On the other hand, leave the cover in place for another 3-5 years, and you'll wonder about it all the time.
Well I have a 90 348 and the bearing was still roller. I doubt earlier motors had the upgrade that happend sometime mid 91 from the factory. Unless someone did it assume you have the roller. If that fails, and it will, its bad juju. Parts outlined for you above are available form Daniel. Those tensioner pads are consumable and need to be replaced and there is 360 oil pump tensioner upgrade available. Good luck!
Only the Mondial T. Mondial 8 = 308 GTSi/GTBi Mondial QV = 308 QV Mondial 3.2 = 328 Mondial T = 348. (T signifying the transverse gearbox with longitudinal engine ala 348)
...and if you're looking at the tensioners, it's 30 minutes max to pull the chain and see if you've got the roller bearing on the block. Ferrarium has outlined all the parts you need. sjd
I could give you my motor number, Last time I checked its with Yes but us is there a way to pull the cover with out removing the sump Pan?
I also can't find the page with the listing of the serial number when they switched to new ball bearings thought it was MY348 but now i'm thinking it was a mondial T buyers guide.....
Well this bulletin calls out 24720 and lower I have 24887.... soo I would have the newer ball bearings and pads ?! Image Unavailable, Please Login
So I do have a roller bearing and it seems ok! But what are you thoughts on these pads? Pump tension Could use a replacement! But timing seems ok ! Also what sealant doea every one like for sump case and for valve covers I also have to drill the cam holes ! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The oil pump tensioner is an upgrade with 360 parts I posted them. Those deep grooves, that can happen with infrequent starts, the oil runs down and they suffer dry starts, and it’s basically a chain saw, replace them both the upgrade is better and larger and won’t rattle. People say don’t start the can unless your going to drive, if you start it infrequently that’s one effect. Good luck!
