I find that I have an increasing pile of tools that I have made or modified to perform maintenance on my 400i & would love to see any tools others have made to make life easier.

I'll start with the first one I modified -

A 6 point 36mm socket machined down to 46mm outside diameter to fit the main crankshaft pulley bolt.

    Cheers,
    Al

This one is for adjusting the timing chain tensioner.
It was made from an old 8mm hex shaft repurposed from a broken caulking gun.
It was heated & bent on each end so that one end is half a flat out to the other allowing adjustment with a minimum swing.

Bent spanner to remove top starter motor nut so the exhaust does not have to be removed on a 365 and probably would work for 400/412

Wow! All I do is sign the cheque - although I have made an injector puller from electrical conduit and a bonnet pin.

Al, I'm guessing that aside from fooling around with a lathe, mill and welder there's not much else to do in the Alice . :)
Great collection of special tools, impressed you've delved in to setting the diff preload.
I've made the head pressing plate for the 412 and also for a 308
For the 412 , a variety of modified spanners to undo the hard lines from the injectors and to undo the starter motor. But curious why you needed to mod a sockect for the crankshaft as the one In my toolkit fitted without problems.

    Thanks Mike,

    What brand socket fitted?
This might be of interest to other members as all the ones I tried had too large an outside diameter to fit inside the pulley.

Not many options around Alice for getting work done so have to do it myself or send things 1500Km away. :(
We don't even have an engine rebuilder in town.

    Cheers,
    Al

412 Head removal plate, made that in 2008 ( not as nice as Al's !) This fits the left hand side. If I was smarter I would have designed it to fit either side, but one side came off with no problems. It's one of those tools you hope never to have to use again. Modified spanners for removing hard lines on injectors, "cut and shut" welding, and a bit of grinding, heating and bending of cheap spanners. Not pretty but work.

Not sure if this is the same category but I made a tester for the Bosch throttle bodies on my 360. Used it to determine which TB was bad and also qualify a used unit. I bought two TB's from ebay and one was a perfect match for the good one in the car. So far, the tester is right.

    Here's the tester in action:

I wrote a long and boring article about it on my blog.

Koken are well known for being great quality with thin walls. Their plug sockets are the best.
