Todd, love yr work! I also had a small issue with internal corrosion on some cradle components when I stripped mine back prior to re P/coating.. fortunately a local shop had an ultrasonic setup to check wall thickness of the parts and was good to go on most, but for one of the lower control arms.. it was like a maraca when shaken and blasted through the skin prior to coating. The stresses caused cracks round the weld on the Koni lower attachments (metal fatigue) moisture got in and the rest is history! I was lucky enough to obtain a LCA for that side off a forum member which helped me out a lot!! This is not an isolated occurrence in these cars as the internals of the framework were not treated in any way for corrosion resistance. Add to that the ingress of moisture over the years can become an issue.
I also found that the O rings on internal pressure components ( for one the gearbox oil pump) had become so hard and brittle that they snapped and shattered when attempting to remove them. I had access to correct sized Nitrile O rings(within batch manf. date expiry) to suit the application to sort that problem.... the question remains though - which critical components requiring renewal of sealing rings within a batch use by date(4 yrs service from my experience) are actually replaced on major service oversight? Mine showed nil at around 28Yrs! However, the fact that a gearbox oil pump is still working on an irreplaceable gearbox after that many years, does not guarantee that the required amount of lubrication is happening at the correct pressures within that same gearbox today!
